MB, Yes those numbers are correct, BUT that list ONLY relates to LATE model Cars with a Different Fault in their Airbags... Sending Shrapnel into your face...

What im on about is cars that are built around 1996-2000ish. Early Model cars fitted with Airbags.. Everything I have posted relates this Era...

Millions of cars World wide that will be recalled and Destroyed or maybe if they are lucky, have the airbag CANISTERS replaced...

The Airbag issue in Early model cars relates to Corroded Canisters as they have only found out about the extent of the Corrosion in the last 6 months ... Not faulty airbags sending shrapnel into your face.... THIS IS A Totally different issue...

Do not just rely on the 'Rego' Website as that has been proven wrong on Many occasions... Using the Sites that require you to enter your VIN number are more accurate....

One Pajero owner had to replace a Horn button in his airbag steering wheel, this is a common issue with most early Pajeros, So He replaced the whole steering wheel complete with airbag with one from a Wreckers...

His Pajero's VIN IS NOT on the Recall list so he phoned MM to ask what He should do... His outcome is that MM now want to know the VIN Number from the Donor Pajero to see if it IS on the recall list...
He hasn't a hope of finding out the VIN of the donor car as it was swapped over 4yrs ago and has been told by MM if he can't supply the VIN, then his car will be bought back and crushed...

All cars cannot be send to Wreckers by law... and they must be destroyed... One fellow saw 8 NL Pajero's sitting in their local dealers locked yard waiting to be assessed for a Buy-back price...

It's totally not fair how owners are being treated by some Manufactures and this has been Highlighted by the ACA article the other night...

Just received the dreaded letter the other day. I have a 98 pajero. Going to do a little research before I have the dealer "look" at it. Worst thing is just had a new donk put it about 8 months ago

If you still have your old motor, Put it back in and I will buy your 'New' Motor... Im on the hunt for a low km 3.5 SOHC ;)

Keep ALL your Recepts for All repairs and submit them to MM if and when they 'look' at yours... They have been adding these recepts into your buy-back figure...

Most 'deals' have been for around $3,000-$7,000 for a pristine example...

LW....

Sorry lonewolf it a 2.8 turbo diesel.
Mines in very good condition one tiny little rust spot but interior is great a few scratches on the duco nothing that couldn't be buffed out. The problem is for that buyback price what can you buy to replace it?

Bummer.... You won't get much for that price that's for sure and this is what people are arguing about... Some, as You would know have invested thousands to keep them and Now they are to be Crushed... Not Right...

In the USA and Japan, Mitsubishi is looking at a fix for the Suspect Canisters, But Not here... Why? It's the same Canister..

The ACCC has a lot to answer on this, but they have remained Silent and keep directing Owners to MMA... Who are telling some very big Porkies ATM...

MM knew about this issue over 10yrs ago, that the Canister's 'life' was only 10yrs from date of Manufacture....

Millions of Cars from the same era are destined to be Destroyed if fitted with an Air-bag Worldwide....

No one is playing Fair on this one. So.. Finally 'Someone' is looking into a Class Action against MM, MMA and the ACCC...

I just cant comprehend why they cant fix it. If the problem was the sealing why can't they continue producing them better sealed. And just have a replacement program. Even if the new inflators only last 10 years. Just have an inspection every x amount of years. And if they look bad replace them. Surely it cant be that hard for mitsubishi or maybe there is a dollar to be made by some company. Its not bloody rocket science! By the time most of these vehicles have there 3 or 4th inspection they would all nearly be off the road

I have a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Ti in beautiful condition. I have searched all the recalls and can't find out if it is or isn't on the list. I definately won't be selling it for market value.
What are the police going to do, using no. plate recognition to take the cars off the road or will they refuse to have them re-registered if they all of a sudden appear on a list? :(

There is talk of them not re-registering vehicles with faulty/ unreplaceable airbags. Pretty crumby in my opinion.

Yes and once Your Car is on the Re-call list, Your car Insurance is null and void... As they classify you as 'Driving an un-roadworthy Car'...

We had a women in our town had her car seized and taken away. But they paid her out for the car. Probably more than it was worth her in S.A.

Most offers I know about have been quite reasonable with Mitsubishi.... Other Manufactures, not so ....

Hi people. I'm new to this site. Thought I'd throw into the ring my airbag story so far and see what you think. I have a 1999 lancer, and received my recall notice ( NOT MANDATORY) about a month ago. It was just for the driver's airbag and not the passenger one. I contacted the service manager of the Mitsubishi dealer in my nearest city, and had a chat to him about it. He suggested that maybe I could replace the whole steering wheel with a non airbag one if it was possible. I did some checking online and found out that my model lancer came out with no airbags as standard, and they were only fitted as an optional extra.
I asked the service manager of that Mitsubishi dealership and he said that it should be ok. I went ahead and had the non airbag steering wheel fitted, and then proceeded to take the car to the dealer to have it inspected. I asked them that if it wasn't going to be ok like this, then I could replace the airbag steering wheel, then, as they were taking all the details, then Mitsubishi could send me an offer if I had to hand in my car. They took a heap of photos and said that it would be all good. When I got back home, I received a phone call from this service manager, asking me to sign a form he had sent to my email, stating that the car had been modified, and no longer had an airbag. The service manager had told me at the dealership, that MM would give me a letter stating that it was ok to change the steering wheel, and that they approved of the change. I felt a little uncomfortable with signing this form, so I contacted Qld Tpt (Vehicle Modification department), and they informed me that I COULD NOT do this change legally. I phoned the service manager and told him of the information that I had got, and he just said that it wasn't true, and all I had to do was sign the form and return it to him, and then MM would send me an approval letter. I did not agree to this, of cause, and asked for the approval first. This wasn't going to happen, so I informed the service manager that I would be replacing the original steering wheel, and as they had taken photos and details of my car, then MM could send me an offer before I handed in the car. The service manager then told me that MM would not be making any offers until I surrended my car to them. No need to guess that I still have my little lancer at the moment.

NO you can't do that as your VIN is on the list for Re-call.. So it makes no difference if you replace Steering Wheel and Dash or not.... And if you DO modify it in any way, its only a matter of time before this re-call turns Mandatory, Then MMA MUST pass your details to the ACCC and they then inform the Department of Transport and your Rego will be Cancelled anyhow...

There is No way around it... Plain and simple...

A Member of the Pajero Forum in WA has done this a few Years ago and now is in Deep :poop: ....

Can you name which Dealer that told you this pile of :poop: ... As they need to be informed by MMA Head office that what they are saying is total BS...

And highly Illegal.....

you are correct and top that off with NCOP allowing the swapping of steering wheels with any from the same model make/year etc... and no reference that airbags have to be retained....

However having spoken to the authorities here in WA, they are stating that while it is legal they wont sign it off (there is another way around it as well which I tried that invovles a permit/expemtion because of factors which make installing an airbag unfeasible/impossible/inpractical... but again WA authorities wont allow it) there comment - straight from the 2 engineers who actually sign the permits and give it all the go ahead. "this is mitsi's problem and they are required by law to replace the airbag - if they refuse to do so then it is on the ACCC to correct that." I asked for this in writing and or the legislation to cover it... they were going to email it to me but instead emailed me a "thankyou for contacting us please contact the ACCC on....." email with none of the details they promised me.

basically all the authorities are diving for cover as this is likely to get very big and cause a lot more issues but they are happy because we now have to go spend more money on newer cars that are likely to be in a similar boat in another 5 years

    It would be the same in every State and Territory in Australia... As I have said in a previous post... The ACCC has a lot to answer for over this.
Secret Deals with Manufactures.... And put it ALL back onto Owners...

I hope you don't mind Felix, but I posted Your Story(no names) on the Pajero Forum and this was the response ....
Quote:
I believe Mitsi are actually correct, but the issue is no one is prepared to sign off on the removal of airbags.... its the same argument as the liability waiver they want us to sign - no one wants to be held responsible for any injury that may occur from driving these vehicles.

If you sign the waiver and someone steals your car there is the possibilty that if they have an accident and the airbag deploys and they die you are liable .... the waiver is opening a huge can of worms. the same goes for removal of the airbags... someone signs off the car has an accident where the original airbag may have prevented serious injury or even death... the person who signed it off may be open to liability charges....

Its a big arse covering campaign.

So far I have seen over 20 NL's bought back here in WA in just over a month - at a minimum of 5000 each the cost to mitsubishi here is already over $100,000 what happens by the time all 8000 expect nl's are bought back in Australia, thats $40million here alone for one model and make of vehicle - add the lancers the BMW's the hondas the audis the toyotas and mazdas and all the other brands ---- we are looking at billions of dollars of buy backs and they say they cant manufacture an airbag because of cost.... the specs are already there - they only have to match the original specifications they gave takata to make. and seeing as its the same part in multiple cars its not even multiple designs over multiple brands. make an inflator that matches the specs of the original without the fault and bang problem is sorted...

Worst of all the problem was noted in 2000 when takata made a change to the design and "apperently" post 2000 ones are not subject to this potential failure - why the hell were these units not recalled then. This has been a known possibility for 20 years ...

So perhaps the Stealer was correct in His info to You Felix, But...

ATM I believe that the reason they won't sign off on replacing with no airbags is that there is a mandate to get older cars off the road. With this in place untill someone lodges a legal complaint nothing will change.

..If it was, all early models would be off the road.. They just need to use the old 'causes too much Pollution' argument to rid all early models .

No just MMA being a bunch of :poop:

Hi. Thanks to all who replied to my post. All good LW. I'm trying to take it all in. I have just contacted my insurance provider for this vehicle, and have informed them of my duty of disclosure about this change of the steering wheel. The car has only third party property on it. My insurance provider is happy to continue my insurance policy, as, since the airbag was an optional extra, and I have replaced it with the "genuine factory" standard non airbag steering wheel, all is acceptable. As to the rest of my problem, I feel disappointed that maybe the local dealer has been trying to trick me so they can save a few bucks buying my car back if they had to. I feel like I should go to a current affair with this story, but maybe I'll wait and see what eventuates first. Don't really want to piss off the monster that might buy my car back.
