That certainly is a dazzler of an earring Sandta, and the African coin looks like a good find for the overseas coin collection. And at least you've got the gear to find that half penny again, unlike the poor sod who lost it, lucky for us they didn't have that sort of gear around back then because they were all over the place getting what they could with what they did have back then anyway, the ground would be awful quiet just like it will be for all those poor sods that have not been born yet, I suppose that's why some people put the junk back in the ground when they've dug it(I don't), just to let the unborn(not undead) have something to find in the ground. Anyway I'm rambling now and people probably think I've been drinking again(I haven't).

Gday GP , yes larger concentric .
Your exactly spot on ... Ding dang ding dong dang dung ding dang dung ding  drives ya bloody mental... I have to step back take a couple of deep breaths , then head off in another direction to save my sanity  oh well ... Thats just the way it goes at times. Im not discouraged in any way.
And ye ... Very cool old coin ... I love those Britania's .
Ive seen heaps of posts and various methods to clean coins , but as yet havent cleaned any... Just unsure
Gota go for now , went out for a couple of hours earlier , will post pics of finds soon ... Didnt get much ... Couple of half pennys

Personally, I would have gone for the 8.5x11" DD coil, better target separation than the concentric and comparable depth. The concentric will always see a lot more targets at any one time due to the shape of its detection area, causing issues with masking of deeper items, plus it will hinder the recovery of the Ace over multiple targets. Considering the DD costs around $200 to buy here, I'd just buy an Ace from the US with one already fitted, as the Ace250/350 can be had for dirt cheap prices at the moment, then just sell the detector when it gets here.

The other option is to try out a NEL Sharpshooter or the Hunter, as they can be bought cheaper than Garrett coils, and are of excellent quality (plus actually include a coil cover, unlike Garrett).

Either way, it looks like you've got things pretty much sussed now with some great finds on the Ace, but the option is there to swap around the coils to make life a bit easier. :)

Theirs pluses and minuses for both coils. If money was not an option in most cases we would buy whats needed.

I helped Sandta with this purchase and did look at the DD for him as well which costs $205.

I organised this for him with Phil at GMC who sold us the new coil for a bargain $100. He will still get some extra depth with the
new coil though.

For the Sovereign I suggested Sandta purchase the Detech and he agreed as well. For what Sandta has paid in total for the 250,
the new coil, sovereign and the detech coil I think that's one of the best bargain purchases I have seen so far with as you can
see a machine capable of finding coins and soon to find the good stuff in the wet sands.

The 8" on the sovereign in my opinion is a bit too small for wet sands. Any deep rings or coins should be found with ease with
the new setup as long as the sovereign is working properly.

I too purchased most of my garrett coils from phil, certainly has some good pricing on his remaining stock. I also have the 9x12" concentric and 8.5x11" DD, and found the DD much easier to use for parks littered with multiple targets, whereas the concentric was more at home coin shooting on the dry sand with less trash density. In saying that, once I put on the DD coil, I really haven't used any of the other coils since, due to how effective it is, other than the sniper coil which has its specific uses.

Whilst I have given the large concentric a good run through some of the places I detect, I simply found it too frustrating to use for my applications, there are better options out there in my opinion.

I do understand though that the purchase was made to a budget, so I do have to take that into account. :)

A little disappointing ,was todays hunt 8.(
I went back to the show ground i visited 2 weeks ago , instead of going over what i ballsed up last trip , i systematically gridded up another section of the grounds. The results were ***** ... To say the least... But that area is now done.
1410604996_image.jpg

Lots of cans ! Drove me crazy
1410605142_image.jpg

I did get a little excited a couple of times .... My holey dollar is coming ;) .... But not today
1410605346_image.jpg

And the barrel of a toy gun

It has certainly been a bit quiet lately, my last hunt was a shocker too, more junk than I care to bother posting unfortunately. Maybe tonight will be more successful, and with less bottle caps hopefully. :)

I headed off early this morning , back to the show ground....
I went to another area , worked out my plan of how to grid up and got to it...
Geez ,there is so much junk here  ... Aluminium cans ... Whole and shredded are everywhere, plus so many screw caps. Its enough to send anyone to the mad house ;)
At least this trip i did manage to bag a few decent finds :)

3x$2 ,3x$1 ,1x50c ,1x5c ,6x1c ,5x2c
1919,1934,1944 &1952 pennys
1934 & 1943 half pennys
And 2 silvers
1410661462_image.jpg

1917 shilling ( my first) :D
And a 1943 three pence

Nice finds Sandta. Next you will find a two shilling
Coin..

Just reading with what you wrote this is where the whites
v3i shines but be warned it has A long learning curve and
With what I have read can be effected by emi though I
have not had encountered this as yet.

The v3i is the only machine I am aware of that runs on
3 frequencies simultanously (not Multifrequency) hence
you get 3 graph read outs for all 3 frequencies.

The high Frequency is where most gold and foil fall in,
the mid frequency is where other metals fall in plus in
My Testing a large gold Wedding band (though will
Do more tests) and aluminium screw cups then you have
the Low frequency graph thats where most coins and
silver Fall in.

So to avoid the aluminium screw caps when checking
Target via pin pointing 1 graph will be stronger than
All the other 2 (each graph represents a frequency)
hence you can opt to dig the low frequency bar only
which is green And so far to my testing all aluminium
screw caps are No longer dug except coins inc silver
And other small lumps of metal duch as pad locks
Buried 5 or so inches.

Problem number 2 is the dreaded metal beer screw
caps. To check if these are under the coil just flick
The switch forward and check the polar plot. If
Lines are round and squigly then its metal.

Its a brilliant Detector when you want to cherry
Pick the $1, $2 and old silver coins though you
Will still encounter other trash.

Great shilling, good condition and an oldy too. I guess persevering with the junk will eventually produce some better finds, it just takes up a fair bit of time digging up the unwanted stuff. :)

Nice finds Sandta - I look forward to reading your posts as much as you read mine - you are mastering the detector now so the game changes to one of location ... And it looks like you found a great place to detect ... Those silvers are nice and once you start getting them with regularity the moderns are just a yawn ... :)

I can't wait to see what you find with the Sovereign ... I love mine and silver seems to speak well to it!

Thanks for the advice and encouraging comments guys ...
Gday Wolf , i like that you are able to do the ground work and testing of the various detectors that will eventually prove to be for the benefit of choice for a lot of us in the future.
Ye GP , the amount of junk we dig and have to endure ,in relation to the amount of finds,is a testament to our dedication .... thats for sure  ...
Hey there Pauly , it wont be long now... Im super anxious and keen to get out there.. I just hope that the beaches over here are as productive as yours ;)

You will be fine. Its just a matter of getting used to the tones
And as long as the sovereign is working as it should with the
Large dd detech coil you purchased it should find. That
sovereign Was my first detector purchase back in the 90's.

Everything at the moment is on pause. Have the XP arriving
shortly then going back to 3 sites i went over with the v3i
Because i know theres good targets in the mix with high
Iron then i will move forward..

I bought the XP after the v3.2 received high praise by
Another guy who is a relic hunter and owns a few machines
And thinks the xp is the best in unmasking in iron and says
The gold field program is brilliant. Its even convinced Steve
H Who is a member here to buy one and test it out in the
goldfields.

Gotta to be smart with purchases. Buying ex demo or from
The USA saves money and you don't lose much when
reselling.

I will have a bit to show shortly though..

I went out again this arvo .. I went to the park near home, its a very large park with lots of different sections. The history of this park goes back about a hundred years . Ive been to this park a few times before but always at night . This is the first time ive hunted there in daylight.i hunted an area that i havent been to before .
Those bloody bottle tops were everywhere here too ...
1410689774_image.jpg

But still managed to do alright :D
1410689875_image.jpg

7x1c ,4x2c ,2x$2 ,1x$1 ,2x20c ,1x50c
1916 , 1938 & 1952 pennys

1919 three pence
1950 & 1962 six pence
1943 shilling ( another first ... Rams head)
1410690211_image.jpg

And 2 rings.... The finer one is marked 925 ... The other doesnt seem to be marked ... The photos certainly make it look like a junker, but im really not sure... Still a pretty cool find though :p

Oh ye .. Dont forget the button ;)

1410690651_image.jpg

I'm impressed.

That area has never been detected and it has a bit of
History to it as well.

No matter how much you clean that site out there are
More goodies among the iron you can not hear so keep
That in mind as you update your machine its a good test
Site to see what remains with your new machine.

Where you using the larger concentric coil?

Thanks for sharing...

Yes Wolf , the large concentric ... Definitely a challenge to mental health with all those screw tops. But in all fairness ... Not the whole area i hunted was littered with them . They were mainly concentrated down the fence line on two sides.ground was pretty easy to dig after all the recent rain.

Wow that would have been a buzz of a hunt Sandta - the silvers look great and the rings a bonus ... You can always pop into one of the many scrap gold buyer shops and have the ring tested - they have a machine which will tell you exactly what metal it is composed of ... And you certainly have nailed a location ... The secret is to find more so you don't hunt the same location to death or not be there often enough to be noticed by other looters ... :)

Thats fantastic. That hunt would of taken at least 5 hours.
No matter whether you were using a dd Or a concentric both
coils will hit the aluminium screw Caps.

Just wondering though. Are you finding any tiny bits of foil?

Its time to go over the other site and see if there is
Anything a little deeper.

Thanks for sharing.
