Well this last week has been wet ,wet ,wet ...
I have used this indoor time to sort out the sovereign and get it set up for the beach... Have made up new battery source , hip mount pouch and have ordered a new coil which could already be sitting in the post office ready for pick up in the next couple of days.
Last week i ordered and received 2 new coils for the Ace .... A sniper coil and a larger 9"x 12" concentric coil.
I fitted the larger coil ready to get out there a soon as the weather let up...

Today was fine when i got up ,so i headed south to a showground ive been thinking about for a while.
I expected a lot of ring pulls ,bottle caps and the usual can slaw .... And there was !
Having never used anything other than the stock coil/detector i just started off as usual... I reduced the sensitivity to 2 bars and discriminated out all but the the top 4 bars ....
I started looking around the grandstand .. The oldest area ( i think)
First find was a penny (1942) ...then a few 2c coins .... thats all i found in about 2 hours :(
surely i should be finding more than this.... I guess someone has already been here before me...
So i moved to an area where i know market stalls set up regularly and the main area people gather during other events( near the beer stand)
Nearly an hour a half later ive only found a few more 1 & 2c coins ...but have a full pouch of rubbish! .. Very frustrating
I look down and see a $1 coin just lying there ... I wave my detector over it .. NOTHING ... Doesnt make a sound 8.(
What the %# !!
So i air test the coin in front of the coil , nothing , i had to add another 2 bars to the discrimination settings.
A trap for new players..... I wasnt expecting that...
Over the next hour i got $26 in goldies..
1409467919_image.jpg

I even found another Brewarina Holey Dollar .. Damned thing even fooled me again .. :8
The 2 20c coins were just lying there to be seen and picked up
Im gonna have to go back some time and re-do the area i first covered 8.(

Nice finds..

So to confirm what was your issue? Did you have the discriminator set too high hence why it
would not find coins?

Be patient and keep going and don't swing too fast..

Nice going Sandta - don't feel bad - the other night I had started a hunt and hit a couple of coins ... And then nothing ... No rubbish ... No nulling of iron - just the steadiest threshold I have ever experienced ... So I stopped for a smoke and then noticed the coil cable dangling in the air ... Must have worked its way loose and came out ... I had to retrace my steps for 20 minutes where I proceeded to pull 2 silver coins I walked over previously ... Wasted time but now I will be wiser! :)

Gday Wolf , yes that is correct ...
Previously with the standard coil , i could pick up $1 & $2 with only 4 top bars , but with the new coil i needed to add 2 more bars to be able to pick them up . The place was driving me nuts ... So much junk!

Gday paul , ye thats funny  ... Live and learn ... So they say...

I had to go out for another try this evening .. About an hour after dinner
1409479393_image.jpg

$4.40 in spendables , too many 1 & 2c coins
And a 1939 penny , that nearly stopped my heart when i first cleared off the dirt

Lol, had the same thing a few times, detector either falsing all the time, or just nothing - damned connector nearly falling off. Checked the G2 before heading out tonight, and surely enough, the coil connector bezel was loose!

Looks like another handy spot to detect around Sandta, the coins are flowing freely now. I've been meaning to get out to some regional showgounds too, just got to pull my finger out. :)

Sandta we all make mistakes so don't stress as long as you learn from the experience.

Took the v3i at an old school site on my 2nd time out. Spent an hour there just to get a feel for the area.
It was very quiet as I was looking for high tones. Nothing..

I then discovered on my 3rd time outing that my settings were set for low tones but I was expecting high tones. This is the nature
of the beast when dealing with high end customisable detectors or detectors your still learning to setup.

Finally a break in the weather tonight, so i went to a park close to home for a few hours after dinner.
Geez i dug alot of junk... Maybe i was just out of sink from so long without swinging or extra keen for the same reason.
It was kind of a night for 3's
3x half pennys ... 43 , 48 and either a 1924 or 1934 cant really tell ... Bad eyes , bad light , bad condition
3x pennys ... 1912 ,1922 and an 1872 ( very ool old coin)
3x 2c
3x1c
$1 coin
And a ring ... Not sure but probably brass

Yes i found a brass ring as well with the v3i. Looked to
be homemade. It looks like a vintage one from the 60's.

All it takes is to hit a small area say 3mx3m and your there
For a while digging out the crap. I found these areas though
to be generally Where people used them as pathways getting
To a swing set or toilet block etc.

That large coil for the soverign should work really well when
It arrives. That was a real bargain and smart shopping.
Have you tried the larger new coil on the ace 250?

I have 3 questionable areas with high iron so everything is
On pause until i get the xp over this ground and see what
Comes out then will move forward hitting 2 old school yards,
old homestead sites which are now just Aussie Bush and a
Ghost town which is high in iron. After researching found 2
Areas that are now Aussie bush that used to be local
Parks in this Ghost which once housed 10,000 plus people.

Sorry guys i must have forgotten to add the pics... I did say i was out of sink
Im glad i got out last night :) its pissing down today :(
Heres the junk...

Sorry about the really crappy photos , this place is covered in in little down lights eveywhere ... Its so bloody hard to not be in a shadow from one angle or totally glarey from another,no camera only ipad

Gday Wolf , havent been to the PO this week to find out if its here yet.
re large coil for Ace : yes used it briefly last weekend and it was on last night.
Something i was battleing with last night ... Larger coil = more targets under coil = longer recovery time = maybe thats why so much junk ... Kept digging iffy signals. Ended up running very minimal sensativity (2-3 bars)

Your main issue is aluminium screw caps which are very
Hard to discriminate out because they fall in the high
Coin range. In some parks these are plentiful compared
To other parks though. With the large coil though it seems
you were Able to cover more ground.

Just learn if you can to distinguish between targets and
Notice at what depth your finding the screw caps which
Generally is around the 3" mark and the older Coins are
around 5" or 6". Not sure how accurate your Depth id is
as well. It was one way i used to use the G2 to figure
Out what was under the coil and after digging 6 you
Quickly learn.

Digging parks takes a while to master though. I also tend
To check targets 2 ways by moving around target.

With the v3i if you don't dig the mid range frequency setting
And dig the lower range frequency then you should get most
coins And missout digging the aluminium screwcaps but might
Missout digging the larger mens wedding band type of
Rings as well. Smaller gold should fall on the higher
Frequency range though hence these don't get missed out.

Good news is day light savings is around the corner.

Thanks for sharing.

Getting into the older coins now Sandta, nice 1872 Brittania penny you've got there. Look at it this way, at least you are cleaning out the junk so you can pickup the deeper targets, sometimes it is just unavoidable. ;)

Spot on Goldpick and I think the new coil which was cheap to buy anyway has given him an extra 1" or so in
depth as well compared to spending serious cash on an upgrade.

Reminds me of when I had my x-terra 305, it was like listening to somethjng from close encounters of the third kind with multi-tones. You didn't know when to start or stop digging, or just to give up - anything deep was completely masked by layers of junk.

Which coil did you get again Sandta, was it the large Garrett concentric?

Gday GP , yes larger concentric .
Your exactly spot on ... Ding dang ding dong dang dung ding dang dung ding  drives ya bloody mental... I have to step back take a couple of deep breaths , then head off in another direction to save my sanity  oh well ... Thats just the way it goes at times. Im not discouraged in any way.
And ye ... Very cool old coin ... I love those Britania's .
Ive seen heaps of posts and various methods to clean coins , but as yet havent cleaned any... Just unsure
Gota go for now , went out for a couple of hours earlier , will post pics of finds soon ... Didnt get much ... Couple of half pennys

I'm impressed. If your hitting 1c pieces your doing well.

These coins are small and have been around for a while.

Good stuff.
