I've been driving trains since I was 17. The last ten years or so I have been working in the terminal because it's a better roster. For the last 3 days I have been doing my periodic re certification. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy driving. There is a satisfaction on running a big train on time and under the speed limit. You have to be thinking several kilometers ahead. Can't just see a hill and open the throttle. Doesn't work like a car, it's all about momentum. To drop down a big hill and just hit the speed limit then crank the throttle open is a bit of a thrill. For those who ride bikes it's a bit like nailing that corner just right. Our trains are 10000 tonnes and 1.5 Ks long. Powered by three 4000 hp locos. Anyway that was my day. :D

Hmm, you may be able to get info, on the locations of long forgotten stations, with detectable treasures? I would like to drive a train, just once.

Used to take my son's back in the day but you'd get the sack now.
Old stations... Plenty of them. Looked at a few today. Mostly they have car parks etc built over any areas of interest. Plus there could be a little bit of metal in the area 8)

G'day Rod, have you done Byrock to Bourke? Not sure of the distance now nice and straight.

Cheers, DD

How did you know that Danny? I started on the job in Nyngan and the Bourke run was a regular. 2nd longest bit of straight track after the Nullabor. Narromine to Bourkeis 206 miles and there was 6 curves. From Nyngan to just outside Bourke is 120 miles and no curves.

Father-in-law was a driver, and even 40 years out of the job there was still a passion that lit his eyes when telling us his various tales of his days on the rails down here in Vic.

Just a guess, we did an exercise at Bourke about 1980 and we were told the same thing about the second longest line.

Cheers DD

wonderful photos - I love to see a clean railbed and manicured ballast. Used to amaze me when i was a youngster and peering over the edge of the Number 11 platform at Flinders Street station in Melbourne circa 1980 and seeing a carpet of litter, mostly ciggie boxes / softpacks and chewing gum wrappers and some of i reckon from the WWII era. Wonderful photos - thanks.

My brother drives trains for QR. Started off at the freight trains then has moved into passenger trains around Brisbane. He told me how you had to think km's in advance and going up ...and down the toowoomba ranges was hair raising.

He always seems stressed out though...any mistake and it could mean your job or a massive crash
