The name of this place was changed in the 1980's but most people still use the original name. It was originally very slow but the pace picked up in the 1970's.
Bingo GT, home of the Finke Desert Classic. The name was changed to Aputula some time back but everyone I know still call it Finke. Sitting on the banks of the Finke River which is said to be one of the oldest river systems in the world it started out as a railway siding on the old Ghan railway and if it wasn't for the annual race it probably would have faded into obscurity.
Been to Finke/Aputula a few times. My mate owned the Mt Dare pub until recently and they used to buy a fair bit of Aboriginal art from the resident artists. The speeds that they get up to on the old Ghan line is ridiculous in the desert race. Ive driven a bit of it SLOW and that nearly killed my Landcruiser. I think they spend most of the time airborne !!!
