I believe that it was the H.M.A.S Sydney. Its memorial was dedicated on the 18 November, 2001 the day before the 60th anniversary of the ships loss.

Good get mate. Its in Geraldton (memorial) and off Geraldton ( sunk ship). It replaced the previous ad hock memorial to remember that sad day we lost the HMAS Sydney 2 and all hands.

Would it be the Glen Osmond silver - lead mine located in Glen Osmond , Adelaide?

The mine was known as Wheal Watkins, Wheal being Cornish for horozontal tunnel and Watkins was the owner

Yep, Bob, that's the place, Glen Osmond was the site of the first metallic mines in Australia. As you say, Wheal was the Cornish term for a mine, but this reference gives the honour of the first mine to Wheal Gawler, the deposit discovered in 1841. Wheal Watkins was opened in 1843.

Oh maybe it was this.... The Trans-Australian Airlines hijacking was Australia's first aircraft hijacking. It occurred on 19 July 1960 over Brisbane in a Trans Australian Airlines Lockheed Electra.
