The Furneaux - "the Group was named for Captain Tobias Furneaux who sighted some of the islands in 1773 and thought they were part of mainland Australia."
I thought this was an easy one but I now know why it isn't. The Island I was looking for was Posession Island off Cape York, where Capt Cook came ashore and claimed the country for Mother England. I was told by a local when I visited the island in 1985 that Cook actually thought he was on the mainland and not an island when he took possession of the country. I just checked Cook's log to confirm the information and found that Cook did in fact know exactly where he was so my question was flawed.
You have a turn Dr.
