No mate. I am a combination of things:

geographic, political, man-made, lost, disputed. My physical attributes can be seen from space - not the political or man-made attributes, just the physical attributes.

I pre-date a colony but that colony and later state got involved in all the issues and was involved in the dispute. The High Court and Privy Council got involved.

No mate. The 'creators' are reported to have nearly lost their lives three times. One ended up drinking horses blood to survive. The issue became because there was what has been determined to be a bad assumption as to the exact longitude of the Sydney Observatory by 3km. A lack of precise clocks to determine longitude was compounded by the fire, lost reports, etc. I am not Sydney, nor am I NSW but NSW had a big part to play in the early days due to the location of the colonies.

I have three names, only one is official.

My unofficial names are:

The [blank] Country.
The [blank] Territory.

The two governments involved were going to try and sort this historical problem. If it is changed, it will involve territory, land, houses, farms, railway lines, people, roads and laws IF it is changed.

Its funny as I have read the book but didn't jerry to any of the initial clues.
Just missed as Jaros beat me by a hit of the send key !! Good on ya mate.

Loamer as for the Coles bit, I was with a mate last night having a few sherbets and we were talking about your question. He then said to me about the first Coles store in St James as he was from there and its their claim to fame. Hence the wise cracks.
I think that sometimes stories vary over time and the fact that G.Coles bought his dads shop 4 years prior to setting up the Collinwood store proves that the St James store was the first G.J.Coles store because that's what it was called. G.J.Coles St James.

Anyway who cares just a bit of fun. As for your City of Collingwood stats, I am fine with that although it was a loaded question of bizzare clues only decipherable when the answer is told. The same clues could be almost attributed to most Melb suburbs. Many inner city councils have amalgamated over the years and or been swallowed up with urban sprawl.

However well done, no sour grapes or bruised ego just a bit of fun and good question that had me stumped at most turns.

I will however have no more mercy when I am asking a question. Its game on. My choice of material will now change from famous Australians and gold fields history that is easily googled, to more obscure, multi faceted facts that can be attributed to many interpretations until the final disclosure is known. :D :) :D

Goldtruck, Loamer, as was typing my answer out is when Loamer placed the last clue. When he said it was a line i instantly went coax cable. A few minutes later it hit*** boundaries, surveyors horses.
Don't you love the way the title "Collingwood" brings out the attitude in people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Scientific_and_Industrial_Research_Organisation said:
A precursor to CSIRO, the Advisory Council of Science and Industry, was established in 1916 at the initiative of Prime Minister Billy Hughes. However, the Advisory Council struggled with insufficient funding during the First World War. In 1920 the Council was renamed the "Commonwealth Institute of Science and Industry", and was led by George Handley Knibbs (192126), but continued to struggle financially.

In 1926 The Science and Industry Research Act replaced the Institute with the 'Council for Scientific and Industrial Research' (CSIR). The CSIR was structured to represent the federal structure of Australian government, and had state-level committees and a central council. As well as this improved structure, the CSIR benefited from strong bureaucratic management under George Julius, David Rivett, and Arnold Richardson. CSIR research focussed on primary and secondary industries. Early in its existence, it established divisions studying animal health and animal nutrition. After the depression, the CSIR extended into secondary industries such as manufacturing.

CSIRO today has expanded into a wider range of scientific inquiry. This expansion began with the establishment of the CSIR to the CSIRO by the Ben Chifley Labor government in 1949 which enlarged and reconstituted the organisation and its administrative structure. Under Ian Clunies Ross as chairman, CSIRO pursued new areas such as radioastronomy and industrial chemistry.
