Stevo, How did you get that one? I thought it would take a while for this one to go off.

Joe Quinn - 2B, SS, OF
Hometown: North Ipswich, QLD
Debut: 26 April, 1884
Final Game: 23 July, 1901
Teams played for: St. Louis Maroons, Boston Beaneaters, Boston Reds, St. Louis Browns, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Spiders, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Senators

The first Australian to play Major League Baseball actually began playing professional baseball before there was one official "major league."

Joe Quinn made his professional debut in 1884 at the tender age of 19 for the St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association.

The son of Irish immigrants, Quinn was born in Queensland and grew up in New South Wales before his family moved to the USA when he was 11.

After his first year in professional baseball, the Union Association folded and Quinn's team joined the fledgling National League, MLB's direct ancestor. More known for his glove than his bat, Quinn led all NL second basemen in fielding percentage twice and had a .261 career batting average in 17 seasons.

The Queenslander also has the unusual distinction of being the player-manager -- and the best hitter -- on the worst team in baseball history, hitting .286 for the Cleveland Spiders in 1899, a team that posted a 20-134 overall record.

In the offseason, Quinn worked as a mortician and ran a funeral home after his baseball career ended.

Quinn was inducted into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame in 2013.

Lucky guess

Heres an easy one...

What is or was the dig tree?

Got a branch from it in the pool room !! along with a piece of the lone gum, the tree of knowledge, the mermaid boab and clarkes waddy. :)

Located on the Northern bank of Coopers Creek the Dig Tree' is a Coolibah (Eucalyptus microtha)

Before the base camp party deserted the depot (stockade Depot Camp 65), only hours before Burke and Wills did return from the Gulf, they had buried some provisions in the remote chance of Burke and Wills return and instructions to dig were carved into the trunk of the tree. The three blazes on the dig tree were:

B LXV Trunk, creek side
Dig 3FT NW Trunk, land side
Dec 6 60 April 21 61 Limb upstream

Great story of expedition this. I've been to most of the camps and special "event" locations of the Bourke and Wills expedition. The Dig tree holds special interest.
The buggers that sat on their bum for so long at Menindee with back up supplies only finally to follow up the lead party of Bourke and Wills and still never get there as they turned around a few Kms short of the Dig Tree when the bumped into the departing remnants of the expedition who gave up on B&W's and were returning back from the dig tree camp(where they waited longer than instructed).
If they only knew what history was to unfold just a few hours later. Gives new meaning to the word "Almost" sends a shiver. 8)

I was born in country Victoria,
the second of 2 children to my parents,
when I left school I started an apprenticeship in pharmacy before moving to Melbourne
I represented Australia in sport for the first time in 1932
