Sorry Loamer, I have no idea and my poor brain now needs to focus on something other that a town in Victoria that has High rise buildings, no airport, 100 pubs, really had no gold influence, now isn't what is it was, has a river running through it, had slums now doesnt and had 3 breweries.
Are you sure I'm not a suburb of Melbourne?
I reckon I've been to most place in Vic and other than Geelong and Metro Melb and suburbs, I have never seen any high rise buildings anywhere I recall. I thought Wodonga or Mildura but they either have an airport or haven't amalgamated..
You got me. :)

You may be on the right track - I may in fact be a suburb. See pics - trams may be a big clue. On the picture, here is a hint - 'look right'.

No, there are numerous high rises- this is a picture of my main shopping area in ye olden days. the high rises are most definitely there today but not on this street- they may be considered eye-sores. They are very close to this street.

Historical facts

1. Coles started in Collingwood - 1914.
2. Boot and shoe trades - wiped out.
3. CUB breweries.
4. Gold listed in Metro Gold Division history notes.
5. Cuthbert Collingwood - Admiral, took over from Nelson.
6. King George VI - fought onboard HMS Collingwood at the Battle of Jutland.
7. High rise commission flats.
8. Gold on streets gravels - probably came from quarry at Studley park.
9. Alluvial gold in Yarra.

They were banned all over the city at one stage to move the miners towards the bigger fields. Quite interesting reading the full Metro District reports. The CBD reports well for alluvial as well. If you ever if Melbourne and get the chance, go and have a look at Flagstaff Hill (just up from the Underground station) - the geology looks good and there was gold reported there.

Thanks for the "read" on Melbourne Gold. I grew up in Noble Park and only ever heard about the gold at Warrandyte, Ballarat and Walhalla. I wasn't bitten with the bug until I was 18 and had a car and license and was able to travel where I liked.
Cheers :p

If you can get james Fletts book 'Gold Discovery of Vic' all the metro areas are mentioned plus some very hard to find sites that you would never imagined had a goldfield - not always successful.

Apparently workers found a small amount of gold when they were digging the gutters to lay the blue stones in Bourke st.

Jaros can you do a question mate, my brain is fried after Loamers epic. :)

And my next one will be even better. A very unique part of Australian history. Involves a threatened invasion etc etc etc. Watch out!!!
