I was an explorer of Australia who was born in Scotland in the early 19th century. I made two significant contributions to Australian History. My first mission was my most noted and my later mission was to search for land that could be opened for settlement in the far North.

This is my first win and first question, please tell me if its too hard or not interesting enough. This fellow spent his later life as an Australian grazier.

No its not Stuart. Right time line.
On his later expedition he was hemmed in by flood waters of the wet. He killed his horses and made fast his and his parties escape by making rafts with the horse hide and saplings.

John McKinlay (26 August 1819 31 December 1872),[1] was a grazier and explorer of Australia and leader of one of the search parties for the Burke and Wills expedition. The town of McKinlay in north western Queensland was named for him.

That's a good get so early Tathradj, I had plenty of ammo on this subject to trickle.

Yes Big John as he was known was a particular iconic explorer to me. I have read his book and the privations that this party endured ( as did most explorers of the time) was an amazing feat. It really ruined his health long term.
He was well respected by governments and geographical societies but none of his recommendations were ever taken up re settlement.
Interestingly he discovered and named the Diamantina river the Mueller, before it was changed.
He found Grays grave of the B&W expedition and was believed to have interviewed the aboriginal tribe that made a meal literally of Leichardt as his mob.

engraving from the McKinlay Memorial, Gawler, SA.

Erected by many colonists as a memorial of John McKinlay. A chief amongst Australian explorers and leader of expedition in search of Burke and Wills, 1861. Born at Sandbank, Argyleshire, Scotland, August 26th 1819. Died at Oaklands, Gawler December 31st 1872.

Brave yet gentle resolve yet unassuming. Formed to command, yet stern to none who knew to obey. He was at once admired and loved. To his country he has bequeathed a name which she may proudly add to the dead roll of her distinguished men.

Over to you. :)

goldtruck59,
Since I have been so slack and had a riot over the past few days,
I hand over to you to test us. LOL.
Sorry for wrecking the Karma of this thread. :)

No mate if you don't earn it you don't get it. No Karma lost mate just got used to putting the brain into gear and was enjoying the challenge LOL
When your ready Tathradj :)

I arrived in Australia in the early 1840's.
It was a big let down from the life that I was used to. I made do with what I had.
I moved into a house designed by me and built by my husband.
I welcomed people with a warm heart and was very adept on a horse.
When I left this world, I was a highly respected person in applying cures.
Who was I?

Cheers Tathradj

I was always second fiddle to more notable explorers and gold seekers. Some say I should of been first fiddle as I was the more experienced bushman. I wrote a book of my time in the 1890's on the WA Gold Fields.
I had a camel team and started by carting goods to the rushes and blazing trails throughout the Goldfields. Found reasonable gold but never anything of note.
I blazed the track from Southern Cross to Menzies and surveyed it. A reward was never paid.

He sure did Jim and he taught Carnegie the art of Bush craft. He was a tough bugger being in the French foreign legion before he came to Oz.
Well done over to you mate :)

Ok mate see how this one goes

I migrated to Australia in the 1850's. I worked in soft goods and tailoring. With my son we speculated in mining ventures. With two others we formed what was to become our best syndicate venture to date which under a future guise, was to pay handsomely. Gold !!
