The Chinese were brought in as cheap labour to work the mines by the owners as early as 1874. Today their decedents make up 3% of NT's population.
Will post a question soon.

I was made from gold from the mine where the first gold was found in Australia. The mine I was created from was found 6 years before Hargraves found gold in 1851 in NSW.
I was a special present for a special person.
What was I and what was the significance of the gift. Significance is placed on the significance for a correct answer. so two part answer please. :)

I'm thinking it was from the Victoria mine at Camstabul S.A. the gold was made into jewellery for queen victoria

THis would have been the brooch made for Queen Victoria from gold found in January 1846 by Captain Thomas Terrell at the Victoria Mine near Castambul, in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Some of the gold was made into a brooch sent to Queen Victoria and samples were displayed at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851.

I suppose the significance was that the mine was named after the Queen.

hahaha, the quick or the dead. it was about 1845 the mine was established. castambul near the small village of Montacute. a gold brooch was made for the ol queen.
the first mine in aust. was also in S.A. a silver mine at Glen Osmond.

Hey fellas, WHERE do you get all this historical knowledge from. It's mind boggling-to me that is!!

hi Jaros. is my home start so over the last 3years I have studied maps, books and the net for scources and location. I had a look at this area but is on private property. it is also about on the tail end of the major gold mines of the area. ie. mt pleasant, Gumeracha, birdwood etc.

Good work fellas
I will definitely make it harder if I get another go.
If you read my question it was quite specific. The significance was as Mr Duck and SD said Victoria mine-Queen Victoria the recipient. I also asked what I was and I was a brooch, Mr Duck described it correctly.
So in my mind as the person in the question seat, I declare Mr Duck as the only fully correct answer. :) ( or should I say first to post the correct details)

Cheers

ALL good.

Thanks, I'll have to think of a question and put it up in the morning, as I've just got home from karaoke at the pub. That was a good one, but the clue was that the mine was some years before Hargraves find at Ophir, that narrowed it down a fair bit!

And Jaros, I'm no historical genius, and knew nothing about this mine or the brooch, but I'm ok at tracking down info on the web!
