And a picture question....

I'm a VERY prominent intersection in Victoria
A famous newspaper had it's premises in one of the intersecting streets (the tallest building in my city at the time, visible in the photo)
Alas the fountain interfered with the traffic flow and had to be removed.
I'm the intersection of ?????? and ?????? streets.

Happy hunting, Tom

I'll pay that as the photo doesn't show the full intersection .....
Actually Collins & Swanston, the fountain was in the centre, the Argus office was I believe the tallest building in Melb at the time (3 stories .....
Here's the verso description c 1860, lovely handwriting in those days.

Back to you Loamer.

Historic Victorian gold town. It is located in a steep valley surrounded by rounded hills, which are actually extinct volcanoes. I am in Ghost Towns of Australia- which is news to the many people who live there! Has an annual non-gold related event. A digger with experience on the California fields mined some samples from the quartz, then journeyed to Geelong to report the discovery.

Yay, that was a stab in the dark. :D

What engineering feat was completed in SA in 1957 with a D7 tractor, and took over 5000 hours to achieve?

The Woakwine Cutting near Beachport (mmmmm - crays) - amazing to visit. The D7 is still there.

Woakwine cutting.

The cutting is one km and the depth at the deepest point is 28.34 metres. The width of the cutting at the top is 36.57 metres and three metres at the bottom. There were 276,000 cubic metres of material removed using a new D7 tractor over a total of 5000 hours.

Through this amazing engineering feat, the swamp was drained, and instead of being useless land, it was ploughed and seeded and now Sheep were happily grazing on this land.

tell you what Ramjet - if this is correct (and I think it is) you can have the next shot. Footy is about to start.

Well done, it's quite impressive to look at times difficult to comtemplate how such a deep ravine could be excavated with just the one machine. :)

An easy one.
Each summer hundreds of aboriginals used to move from the lowlands into the Victorian mountains. Here they held ceremonies and rites. What was the reason for the gathering?

Sorry about delay,
