A PI detector like the newer minelabs need a certain sized piece of gold to energize and create a signal. A VLF detector does not need a solid piece and can pick up speckled gold in rock that flash new detectors cannot. Same with alluvial dust, a gpx5000 will not detect it but a VLF like a whites GMT give a loud signal. That big specie had no visible gold on the outside but had larger enough pieces inside to give a signal.
