Thanks Wall and all others, I finally finished my river sluice, I never realised how much I would miss having our factory with all the gear to do projects like this after I retired. Not only no factory ,but no man shed either. very difficult when permanently travelling around in a caravan. The main body wasn't a problem , no need to weld, just pop rivet all together. The matting as suggested from Bunnings, no problems. the bread crate, asked Brumbies, Wollies , Coles ,bakers ,shops ,sports clubs, Boat club kitchen, all said the same thing, that the crates always remain the property of Tip Top or who ever supplied them, and they had to return the same amount that they received . Bummer, so I tried the recycle people at the tip, no go, plenty of milk crates. finally my nephew who is a chef snaffelled one .(Bloody butey). The expanded metal was also a big problem, after going every were in the place I was staying, that has quite a lot of engineering factories ,and a couple of scrap metal yards, the only stuff I came up with had a very small opening.(no good) So I had to give up as it was time to head north to Ingham Qld. On the way I called in to visit my brother who lives in a little place called Banana , small town with 1 pub come caravan park, 1 servo,a small PO. and a few houses. while I was staying there I gave him a hand cleaning up his yard, and I can,t believe it ,under a pile of bits and pieces , Bloody hell ,off cuts of expanded metal, and sloped as well. he said he picked it up at their little tip ages ago, fair dinkum you would have thought I had just unearthed a 1 oz nugget. Anyway it's finished.

hi wal and every one I would like to know how important it is to use the 2 different types of mesh I have the cat walk mesh is it necessary for better gold recovery to use the sloped mesh thanks all my walbanker is almost ready for its first run
cheers terry

I think the catwalk mesh would work just as good for gold but the sloped mesh wouldn't work for saphire because the stones slide over the slope easy but get caught in the cat walk because of the straight edges the stones must bounce or be pushed over it giving it more time to plant it self on the bottom. That's my guess anyway ;)

thanks diggenholes mate would you know if you can buy the sloped mesh from that place at Smithfield ullrich aluminium

I don't know terry, I'm Still waiting for my old work to get some so I can grab the off cuts might just have to start looking elsewhere as well.
I have run mine without it and still caught gold in the crate section
I did have a small piece in my test sluice but that got chucked when I started building the banker.
I think a few guys in here have gotten it from ulrich give them a call or just cruise your local industrial area stop in at a few steel fabrication places
Cheers

thank mate for the reply I got the cat walk mesh at Ulrich wasn't much I meant to ring today but forgot will ring tomorrow and post if they have any of the sloped mesh

Hi guy,

I built a Wal type River sluice see below:

I have given it a run still have not panned the material.

I have some material I ran through the sluice and some I collected where no water was available.

My question:

If I want to set it up at home to run material collected, a lot of clay, what volume of water do I need to have running through it (approx. 350mm wide x 75 mm height tapered to approx. 270mm?

Is there a cheap device that can do this in 240volts?

I ran it with a 1000GPH 12 volt bilge pump (NO GOOD) then added the hose full bore (started to look OK).

Thanks for any help

Kind regards,
Eric

id suggest if you want to run it at home with what you ahve you could buy some vmatt and run it the length of your sluice it will concentrate really well. otherwise your going to need quite a bit of water and some more room for slick, maybe make another bread crate section 1/2 the size and allow your material and water to build up a bit.

Hi Bendigo and surrounds guys, I just bought some material for my Walbanker locally. Cable tray from Active Electrical, Golden Square. Catwalk from commercial walkway place just off Rohs road between storage sheds and Roddwells. Looking for expanded mesh for gold only version of Walbanker now. Cheers max :)

Thanks GOlddigg@ your right I need to get the water to accelerate more with less drag. I will make a smaller trap area. A mate thinks he has an old pool pump this should give me some volume to work with. Regards eric

Have some steel type available. Off to see my old boss at the scrap yard early next week for materials for the next project, so if I'm free you're welcome to some, trying to find some decent aly type for testing.

Nice one, walbankers go international. Had mine running over the last week and its already claimed a few grams. Going on a snowboard holiday next Feb in BC, just working out if the walbanker will go as oversized luggage for the down days

If that's a couple of buckets you're on a good thing there Wolf. I'm sure the banker will show some great color after a few hours with that wash. All the very best of luck with it, and look forward to seeing how you go.

Cheers Wal.
