Hi HU,
Thanks for the golden wishes mate, but I'm up against some of the best (tryhard and vstrom) with their Zeds.
I have only installed a stone guard (D-Felctor) at this stage, with no further protection for the fibreglass. Will look to add further protection on my return (ran out of prep time).
The twin batteries are protected by a single fuse near the first terminal, so that's good to go - like tomorrow at 6am :Y:

Good luck on the road tomorrow BW, youll be heading off in some ****** weather though.... it will give you a good guide to your fuel consumption towing into a 35 knot north wester thats been hammering Adelaide today and rain to boot.. at last.
The Nullabor crossing is a pi55er if youre pushing into a westerly gale towing, practically doubles the fuel consumption.
Looks to be good conditions though from Monday on. :Y:
Hope the gold gods are smiling when you arrive.

Hey PA, playing some catch-up after a faster than expected trip over. Was planning 750kms per day as Dig'n-it and I did last year to FNQ, but this time we averaged 1000kms per day.
The first day started OK with a catch-up at Ballarat, with tryhard, vstrom and AUaddict.

Not long after we hit the road for Adelaide, the Vic storm front came through with gale force winds on our fore quarter (killing our fuel economies and throwing the vans around). Trees and branches down across the roads, truck roll-over, and torrential rains often limiting our road visibility to 20m or so, severely reducing our pace.
Never the less, we still managed 1000+ kms that day, arriving just shy or Port Augusta for a bush camp after night-fall (no phone/internet coverage). The rain and wind had eased, so we had a pleasant night.
Day 2 hit the road before sun-up and sprinted for the WA border where we circled the wagons on the cliff tops above the Bight (again just shy of the border). That was a beautiful camp site, well chosen by tryhard. Sunk some beer and whiskey before falling to an early and deep sleep with the smell of the ocean (and green rock oysters - according to AUaddict) - again no phone or internet coverage - beauty!

Day 3 was again up and on the road before sun-up, but slowly till dawn due to road-kill signs.
Gunned it to Kalgoorlie, where tryhard led us to a powered camp site in town for an easy night with a shower. Was hoping to visit the SuperPit, but that will need to wait till our return trip.
Averaged around 1000kms per day to Kalgoorlie, so was a day ahead of my plan.
The new van towed beautifully, but the newly installed rear van camera failed on day 3 and today I noted the new internal 12V charging outlets were not charging.
These were all added (by myself) to the second battery, so measured the primary battery at 12.9V and the secondary at 7.8V. Recalled that I'd cut a twin lead from the secondary battery that arced my side-cutters, and discovered the secondary battery's 50A fuse had gone (my goof). Have now isolated the secondary battery and wired everything to the first, and hopefully get a new fuse tomorrow to get the second battery back on-line.
More tomorrow.

Standing around with your hands in your pockets in that first photo. That looks like good ground, I think you'd find targets all over the place :) You made great time guys but that trip can be really enjoyable if you can take a bit of time to look around. Take a look at Caiguna Blow Hole it's just 50m off the road and a climb down to the crystal clear water in Cockilbiddy Cave is a great way to spend a few hours. Anyway I guess the lure of gold is just too great at this point ;)

Hey who's who in the top pic fellas?

some great camping spots along the cliffs. Hopefully it was not to windy for you and welcome to the beautiful state of Western Australia.

Day 4 we split the group, with tryhard and vstrom going to their mate's lease near Coolgardie, with AUaddict and myself going to around Laverton to meet with madtuna at Erlistoun Station.
We'll split trip posts after this post - with AUaddist and mysely starting a new thread titled AU and BW in WA.
AUaddict and I met madtuna early that afternoon for some well landed beers, a red and a good cook-up. MT told some cracking yarns of a rich life lived, and of his love of his station life. A bloody top bloke :Y: Will be back when I can.
We were invited to help retrieve a bogged Finnish couples' vehicle (4WD not working and road tyres):

The vehicle was well sand bogged and had to be ploughed 50m to firm ground:

Day 5 we left for Laverton; parked the vans in the local campground and headed out to find:
1. Gold finds (main priority),
2. Place we could get our vans into,
3. Level ground and firewood.
We struck out with no gold finds let alone suitable camp sites.
Will try again tomorrow. Always hopeful!!!!
Oh yeah, the red dust:

Oh that dust!!!! Gets into every groove and crack in the car. When I remove a tail light etc. the dust is right in there -like a new red paint job. Still great fun getting it in there. Nice pub.
