Perhaps a bit of a fool to myself Goody. I've not been trained in many of the things I do but throughout my life if ever I was asked "Can you do it?" My answer has always been "Yes." Then I'd try to work out how and of course if anybody else could do it then I could do it too. The problem was that in many cases it didn't pay well. Even these times I'll take on something that I've never attempted before, mainly because I find it hard to trust the work done by others. I'm 65 years of age and my lack of trust is not natural, it's learned from many years of bad experiences from a broad range of services from government and industry :(

You are a bloke after my own heart. I use the saying that "I will have a go at anything except open heart surgery" and usually with a bit of research and care things work out well. Doing a great job on the trailer. Will the ramp hinge joints need a bit of extra support to take the load of the quads?

Rob at this point I'm just going to try it with the hinges taking the load. I found these nice little stainless steel hinges with 8mm pins, made in Italy. I think I must have bought them when building the bus some years back but they seem perfect for the job. The mountings are only into 3mm aluminium so they could loosen after a bit but I don't want to add anything I don't need.

the trailer is looking great MB. nice work.
one thought to keep in mind, s/steel & aluminium are electrolytically incompatible & could cause corrosion of the aluminium in time. This is only really an issue if it gets damp with salty water (being near the ocean ... ie Geraldton), or accumulated salty/alkaline/acidic soils.
Its a good idea to put a thin Nylon or HDPE sheet between the S/S & Aluminium.
For this reason its actually better to use heavy galv hinges & replace them once the zinc is corroded & gone & they get a bit rusty

How is the weight Moneybox it looks like you need a truck to tow it?

Love the build mate

Just to answer your question Makka, all the checker plate used to build the body and the ramp weighs right on 135 kg. There's a bit of square tube and then there'll be lots of fittings, latches, hinges, mounting points, jocky wheel, spare wheel (for the bus) mounting etc but it won't be too heavy. The weight of pulling it into a head wind is more of a problem because it's almost as wide as the bus and unlike the earlier trailer will catch the wind.

Good point DD but I won't be doing that at the moment. Moisture is hard to find out here but more importantly HDPE would provide a slip joint where I'm hoping friction will keep my hinges in place.

yep the holes need to be a close fit to the bolts to prevent or limit any movement.
the trick is the match drill the hinges & mount point with a slightly larger bit than what is in the hinge, or ream it slightly with the drill bit until the bolt just slides thru.
eg, a 7/16" bolt is 11.1mm diameter, fits nicely in a metric drill hole of 11.5mm
or a 5/16" bolt is 7.94mm diameter, fits nice n snug in a metric drill hole of 8mm
... and yeah, Cue likely wont present much of a problem. I was thinking more of the bit of moist salt air you get near the coast.

I'm very concerned about the strength in the hinges-just my thoughts.

Jaros, I'm pretty confident that the hinges are strong enough. They are made from 3mm SS with an 8mm pin and mounted onto 3mm Aluminium so I think the mounting will fail before the hinge.

Looking great Phil...

Wish I had somewhere I could have a work shop,

I like building stuff and miss not being able to do so,

Goody :)

I just want to fly into Cue International Airport and do some detecting. Now what time is the next flight? What flight delayed? Unbelievable!
Mackka
Mackka, catch a ride with the RFDS, & be sure to take your detector as carry-on luggage & swing it all the way on the 4km walk into town. you should pick up a fair bit that the last FIFO Tourists dropped on their way out :goldnugget:

My church has the best Mens Shed, it continues to grow and now has had to split into two days for members.
What a great incentive for blokes to get together and yarn.
I am pleased to say that my wood lathe, dust extraction system and tools are being used to the benefit of all.
Soon, I will be asking for my Church to build a Shiela Shed.
We are not alone in issues nor are we different in many ways.
I love all women and I am extremely sorry for the troubles men create for you.
I guess I am just the luckiest man in Queensland because my wife is My Life.

nah nah nah don't delete
that's heartfelt, honest, innocent, & the Shiela's Shed could actually a very good idea if they endorsed it!
