So my 14yr old kid is trying her first Home Brew....

Hi GH and Kato
another thing you could try is Kombucha (fermented tea) you need a scobie and tea and sugar creates its own bubbles and the overnight ferment is a light refreshing drink i ferment mine for 1 week to ensure sugar is used and it is quite tart but good health benefits

GPX, mate you and Kai should get together and come up with a brew recipe for site members to prepare at home and share,

you guys are awesome with your setups.

LOL, maybe call it "Wandering Blindly"
All I have is beer recipes nowadays, I could still throw a ginger beer together, but I'd want to fine tune it, would take a few brews.

I just buy my ginger beer now, still one of my favourite drinks

So after some discussion, and getting her organised, the beer has been bottled.

All in PET bottles, I wasnt quick enough with the glass.

Miss 14yrs knew everything (yeah right) but it still got done, and she was proud of it.
Then Miss 3yrs was instructing her to put in the sugar lumps and put on the lids.

Miss 3 decided that she could do it also, and showed her older sister how to.

By the second bottle, Miss 14 is an expert.

We are now searching for a Ginger Beer mix, but I am buggered if I can find it, will have to target a brew shop,
not as common as they used to be, and I prefer to spend locally if I can.

So a search of local traders before thinking about the net

Even the local supermarket used to carry them.... not now. :(

Just wondering if anyone has kept the spent yeast, and maybe got it to grow again ? How ?

Thanks Silver, a little more advanced, to be done after a successful mix kit.

Getting a success is important for their confidence and curiosity.
Like Beer I have a few from scratch recipes for Ginger Beer, but after the kit they have a known target to aim for and how it should turn out,
know the time, smell, taste, texture and look (like the Beer ;) )

My wife just makes her own cake recipes, they usually turn out crap in texture and taste, we throw at least half away everytime,
then she wonders why the kids dont want to make cakes with her. She doesnt take note of the recipe and substitutes things or volumes.

SO, I started buying packet mixes and sent them with the girls to the Nonna to make together - BAZINGA, it worked, the kids made successful cakes,
are enthusiastic to cook and curious about varying things from the mix, and ready to make cakes from a recipe, BUT not with Mum.

LOL, my kids now jump into making dinner for themselves or all of us, 3yrs 8yrs 9yrs and 14yrs, simple fare but they enjoy a bit of
'try it, cant really go wrong' food prep, at first it was a push to get them to do it because they were trying to be 'Chefs' but now know
there isnt much that can go wrong, give it a go.
The 3yr old is so funny, she's like Head Chef and bosses the others.

Giving the kids confidence to do is the key ;)

Miss 8yrs, replaced 2x bike tubes a week ago, her first time, some supervision and a brand new tool kit (hers alone), she is the family
bicycle repair-girl now, and proud of it too.
She did a great job ! :Y: :trophy:

How does it go? TEACH THEM TO FISH........ :)

Silver ..SHHhhhh Dont tell everyone, just keep it between us.

I know of a wine that is boiled, YES a wine, a white wine made from a red grape, figure that one out, and the wine is GOOD!.... Hic!

These are practical things most kids have no idea about, like canned and jar'ed food is high temp steamed to kill bugs.
I thing my kids view me like the old guy in 'My big fat greek wedding' carrying a bottle of Windex. LOL

I used to drink home made ginger beer as a kid. (used to blow up under the verandah. lol)
But I tried to make a batch of that coopers Ginger beer and it was horrible chemical tasting yuk!

That's just Coppers beer, tastes like Murray River water :awful: :awful:

Found it, you can all stop looking now. :)

Local Brew shop has Gingerbeer coming in next week, so I will have some put aside to be picked up, and some Sarsaparilla too.

In the mean time I will get her to start a Stout for Winter for me and Father in-law, or maybe Miss 3yrs can wack it together.... LOL, never too young !

The Stout should be ready to bottle by the time the Ginger kit is here, and the Ginger is a fast turnover if you dont want alcohol, but it will have to go into glass.
I wonder where I could find all those bottles ? OH YEAH the cellar.

Now the girls will learn to clean bottles and cap them too.

Happened to be passing by that Brew Shop yesterday, and dropped in, learned a few new things while there.

Kato's kit has a 12 or 13L tub which is a smaller one from normal kits that hold 23L, so standard can kits are too big in volume,
but only 1/2 to 2/3 the $ price of the suitable cans for her kits.

ALL GOOD, because you can just use 1/2 of a standard can and either toss the rest, or as I will try - freeze the remainder and wait
until the first 1/2 has finished it brew, THEN thaw the second and mix it up, and some yeast sediment from the first brew and away you go.

Another experiment that can prove vitality of yeast, then may also try to 'freeze dry' some yeast and bring it back to life,
as well as just dehydrate some and see which survives the best to restart.

Ginger Beer kits are on standby out of stock for longer apparently.
(she was drink a ginger beer last night when I picked her up from her boyfriends after they went to the pub - O:) a whole other story, LOL)

SO... a Stout is definately in order to make now.

Good choice on the stout, I've got a chocolate porter in the fermenter atm, and also a pale ale.
Next up will probably be a red ale

Hi nucopia,

Well if Kato's little science experiment has motivated you, great stuff, we should all have enough interests in life to feed our minds (and stomach's)
keep us social and physically vital.

Show us your setup, and tell us about your processes. ;)

That's how Kato can learn from other Brewsters on this Forum, she would love to hear technique and why it's done that way, I certainly don't know much
and more skilled Brewers can teach just by discussion.

Miss 3yrs should do her's today, "like making cupcakes" she says, in her tiny thrilled voice.
And really it is all about cooking chemistry, in truth.

Kato's brew has been carbonating for a few weeks now, so some in the fridge last night, to test for gas and taste, report to come.
Nonno is waiting patiently for that taste test and we will be seeing him Saturday. :Y:

Hmmm ..reading through this thread, has inspired me to get my brew kit out of the shed and start mixing a brew again.. :)

Cheers GH ..
This is the first brew I have made in ages (2-3 yrs) every thing was stored in the shed, sterilized with baby bottle solution before packing away..just pulled it out of the shed gave it a rinse out and resterilized every thing again.. before that i drove to our local woolies and grabbed a bottle of Milton anti-bacterial ,a can of wort (woolies home brand larger ) a kilo of dextros, some bottle caps and a pack of coopers carbination drops .. cost me about $23
I just follow the instructions on the can.. mix wort with hot water and stir, then add the dextros and stir until every thing is well mixed ,then add cold water to 23 litres . If every thing is then between 20<30 deg add the yeast , seal the lid and put in the air lock ..
Its now happily bubbling away ..I will check its Specific Gravity SG with a hydrometre next Friday , if its SG is 0.5 ,its ready for bottling ...
I also might visit the brew shop today and get a different wort for the next brew..
Now my only issue is that the digger cashed in all my 750 ml bottles at the recycling station a while back, so I need to restock ...
