Well we start to take some tentative steps, the results are in from the wife's gut biome testing and it still shows salmonella in the system at 0.41% of her biome some eight months after the initial infection.
Gastroentologist has done a gall bladder scan as sometimes salmonella will take up residence in gall stones but all clear there, that's a positive.
Gastroentologist contacts another infectious disease specialist who suggest a 28 day course of super strong antibiotics to be started two weeks prior to an operation.
We meet with the orthopaedic surgeon today and he is still very reluctant to go ahead due to the high risks associated with joint infections from salmonella and the death rates which he tells us can be higher than those of breast cancer. He also feels his hand is being forced by the progression of her knee and the effect it is having on her over all health.
So we begin the slow progression towards surgery, blood tests for a raft of things tomorrow, X-rays tomorrow afternoon and a return to see the surgeon late next week where we will have to make a decision to proceed or not.
Tough decision as the delays are preventing the tweaking of her neuro stimulator and the associated benefits of that on her Parkinsons, plus the impending arrival of grandkids in September and her wanting to be mobile and healthy to greet them, this needs to be weighed against having the surgery and risking a serious infection, or delaying it for another six to twelve months, losing even more mobility and suffering pain almost constantly while we hope the salmonella clears, not guaranteed as she may well be a carrier so any surgeries are done at risk.

Fair amount of anxiety at the moment as we work through this.

Well the decision has been made, after much to and fro ing between specialists the consensus is to go ahead with the operation. Lorraine is booked in for April 29th. Next week is filled with pre op meeting, physio, bloods etc but we appear to be on the home straight and time will fly.
Start a course of super strong antibiotics a week before and a week after to offer some protection from cross infection from the salmonella plus plenty of intravenous drugs during the hospital stay.

All going well 10-12 weeks later we may get a camping trip in before the grandkids arrive

Onward and upward, thank you all for you support and for listening to our story.

All the best to Lorraine :flowers: you and your family Manpa for a successful op and fast recovery. Tell the surgeon you want their top notch service to allow for a speedy recovery so Lorraine can keep up with the expectant grand kids :Y: and get out for that camping trip

Positive news - at last - that's great! Best wishes for a successful op and speedy recovery for Lorraine. :flowers:

Best regards to you both.

Just found this thread, Manpa.

I and our family wish your wife and yourself to have a successful outcome, and to have many camping trips with the Grandchildren.

This will be a difficult time, but I sense that you are both strong willed people, and are going into this together,
with only the best outcome in mind.

Onward and upward.

GH, it has been a tough few years for Lorraine, she is strong willed to the point of stubbornness sometimes which can be to her detriment.
The one thing which has been a constant is change.
We have both learnt to roll with the punches and make the most of our lot, this hopefully will be the last hurdle for a while and we can get on with enjoying life.
Once again thank you everyone for your prayers and best wishes.

Well Lorraine has a shiny bright new knee to match the other one, surgery went well, moved out of ICU into ward today. Looking to be home by the weekend all going well with the physio etc. Been out of bed already testing the leg.
The relief, you can just hear it in her voice and see it on her face.
The nursing staff have been wonderful, all very interested in her DBS surgery and the effect it has had on her Parkinson's and I'm sure she is getting some extra attention.
Fingers crossed for a good recovery and no problems.

Im interested to know how long recovery takes as Mrs Wishful looks like she will be having her left knee rereplaced in about 3 months time.
