There was a pyrite works just upstream from the rail bridge back in the day. Theres plenty of it near where that was. There was also a cyanide works right next to the rail bridge

Yeah. . Well this area was behind a big log in the creek. From top layer, didn't bother digging any lower than a few shovels.

Greater is the creek to sit along regardless of finding heaps or nothing

Great photos Yobs.

Also interesting to look at the old maps around the same time ( late 1800's). If you overlay the modern town maps its hard to believe the original settlements were all gold mining operations. Bet there are a few folks with town property in Gympie with gold in their yards.

Went looking for the old Eldorado Mine near Monkland (Eldorado St near Bunnings) this week...couldn't see any current sign of the old mine. There are a couple of gullies not far from the gold museum but I suspect no-one is going to allow fossicking in those areas.

All good stuff. The more I learn the more I am amazed at our gold mining past.

Being new to this hobby I still have very much to learn.

Just wondering if anyone knows if there was any prospecting back in the old days east of Gympie around the existing Cedar Pocket Road area where East Deep Creek runs through that area.

Also, if the geology of Gympie allowed for gold, then why was gold not found anywhere east of the original township.

For example, it seems that the topography around Ross Creek (on Tin Can Bay Road) might lend itself to gold...anyone know if there were ever attempts in that area to find the elusive yellow stuff?

I have been told the Aztec people made there way here through tincan bay to collect/mine gold....apparently there was south american wood found in tincan bay which lead to this investigation which then uncovered a path/road they used . Some one recons you can still see it?
Hence the Gympie piramids?

Thinking of taking a whipper snipper next time I go down there. Too many big holes people have dug up and just left.

Mike - I cant see why the whole of Gympie and surrounding area wouldn't be riddled with gold. Only thing is how deep and how concentrated. As for alluvial gold, I believe every river or creek would have it hidden somewhere.

Hey guys, When are you lads planning another trip id definetly be keen to come and learn more about it. Just hit my first gold on a trip over to Queenstown.
Got the itch now haha.

Cant seem to find it yobskin, I searched for it but cant see anything in relation.

Gave it a go today. Running too fast where I was so couldn't use the Bazooka. Think I did pretty well for a 1ft cubed digging. Classified with a yabby sieve and got 1 1/4 glue tubs (plasterer) of cons. Sorry about the pic, whatever setting my 5yr old put it on has made it look really dull and brown. 1 pic, battery dead.

thanks bud. Rather bizarre because the gold is the same nice gold colour as my top pic on here. Where it will make the coin dull and the gold, well gold. Whatever it is set on atm does the complete opposite; gold dull, coin shiny.

14th mate, seems to be the go for everyone

Did the weekends rain improve the flow in Deep Creek? It's been a year since I was there last, I'm up there again at the end of the week and I have two new Angus MacKirk sluices to try out.

Yep we got got some water flowing mate.
The creek got a little flush out..should be some good gold getting around....some PA boys will be there on Saturday.
Good luck...
