By the way its possible to be a hunter and an enviromentalist who has a practical impact not one of those ones wants to stop every one enjoying anything or doing anything productive and use the enviroment as a reason to shut them down. Here is an example. I have been attempting to iradicate all the foxes in the area and dont keep a cat any more. The result is that this bandicoot pictured has now managed to succesfully raise three offspring since I started. They have not been seen in this area for many years. I will try to get a pic of the babies. Thinking about getting a .223 or something smaller though, the 3006 is costing me a small fortune.

Hey Bandit,
My opinion counts as much as yours! :N:
YES IT DOES. my appolagies..... I ment to say your opinion doesn't effect my decision to own firearms as a hunter and sporting shooter :Y:I have edited it :Y:

Thanks bandit. No offence intended or taken.
Part of the joy of living in a democratic society is free speech.
Cheers mate.
Dave.

NOTE: Didn't mean to tar everyone with the same brush.
As stated, I only meant to forward the news story of the alpaca slaughter.
I never wanted my post to degenerate into a debate on gun laws.
As in the US, we all have strong opinions on that subject both for and against.
I mentioned earlier I used to be a hunter myself.
I have feeling for both camps in the gun law debate.

A mate told me one day how he and some shooter friends sold their old weapons to the government, during a gun buy back.
They then went out and bought brand new weapons with the money they received.
I wonder how many shooters did that?
My dad had a very old antique .22 single shot rifle that had been in the family for many generations. He turned it in to the cops during a gun amnesty. The cop he spoke to tried to talk him out of giving up such an antique and in such good condition. My dad had never been a shooter (unlike me) and I was disappointed to see that gun lost to the family. It could have been accepted by a museum somewhere.
Cheers all,
Chiron.

Not quite an Alpaca...but I whack about 1000 camels a year.

Yeah I know...I'm going to hell :D

Bloody Big Alpacas they are.... ]:D .... Your good.... Camels are Pests... :Y:

LW.....

Not bad eating either

Don't know, Shaker! I went to an Alpaca dinner a few years ago, run by the Alpaca association who were trying to drum up a market.

It was 5 courses with matched wines, and even though the chef was pretty good, and I'll generally eat anything (I've eaten horse and most offal, for example), I was not particularly impressed.

The Alpaca was pretty dry in my opinion.

Sorry my bad. I meant Camel is not bad eating. I have had people eat it and think it was beef. Cooks up well in a slow cooker, some red wine, tomato paste, vegies, garlic and a bit of salt. I am getting hungry thinking about it :)

Doc, I know where you are coming from. Up here in Qld, I am very, no extremely grateful that I have been able to experience many different meats, Emu, Croc, Buffalo,Barra, Mud Crab, Moreton Bay Bugs, Steak from Rockhampton (the beef Capital of Australia)
and not to

forget our North Queensland Prawns, magnificent.

I am a responsible gun owner and have been a hunter most of my life and i object strongly to being lumped in with the moronic idiots that perpitrated this crime . I agree with LW it is much more likley the aholes involved had a differddnt barrow to push . Don,t forget the same people that use these incidents to try and take my rights away are the same one,s that want to stop you fishing or four wheel driveing , or dare i say it prospecting . Grow up people and stop jumping on the bandwagon with the rest of the anti,s
Jim

Ps i am a hunter and proud of it not a criminal because of it

This is not good to hear, It could a variety of persons involved in this slaughter.
But it comes down to education, in saying this - you cant educated idiots that own firearms.
I had my first .22 at 7yrs old, single shot, and my old man said if I used it any way that was wrong he would wrap it around my arse and then wrap around a gumtree then give a good bootin to finalize the termination of owning a gun.
I never stood out of line, did the right thing. Had fun shooting rats in the sheds and chook pen.
I hunted rabbits and shot lots of foxes, that was near 50yrs back. Got my first shotty 12 gauge single barrel when I was 12 and was only allowed to use that in the presence of my father, same rules applied, and they where all locked up when not in use.
I did enjoy my rabbit hunting, loved it, lots of bunnies around in those days.
But since the amnesty i got rid of them as it was to hard to keep track of licesncing so they went.

If used correctly and not in the hands of clowns I dont see the reason not to own them, considering owning a compound bow is much deadlier than a gun, quiet no noise and a slower death.

I was in America last Sept and traveled around California, had a look at some of the sport stores and it certainly opened up my eyes. Got to hold 500 cal hand gun ( biggest hand gun made) he even popped the shells onto the counter
How did he know that i wasnt a crazy?

Military rifles galore,

Thank goodness we dont have that here.

Anyway, Alpaca's look pretty cool, but sad that this happened. there are idiots out there that ruin it for the genuine gun owners, just the same as prospectors, the ones who dont care about what they do, tresspass and so on.
There are Cowboys out there that just cant help themselves and just think its cool just to shoot things up.
With a bigger population you will have a bigger looney problem.

Anyway, I have they catch them and kick em up the bum big time, times are changing and you cant tell the younguns to do these days, now they are trying to bring down the voting age to 16.
In a sentence, the world has gone to ***** with all of the bullsh#t, no more respect at all.

Sorry for the rant lads, each to there own and stay safe.

Cheers
Brad

As a youth on an outback trip with my parents (we had many trips) I borrowed my Dad's ancient 22; aimed at a parrot in a tree over a dry river bed and thinking only to scare it; on my first shot ever - I killed it. I got a justified whopping from my Dad and criticism from the whole family. I was so ashamed, that I've not touched a gun since.
I know that pastoralists have to protect their livelihoods from vermin and introduced species.
I know that our brave defence personnel are trained and ready to protect us and our way of life.
I also know that demand creates supply, and as I eat meat, I am therefore responsible for the slaughtering of livestock.
I wouldn't hesitate to hunt to survive (I do love fishing though), but I hate this senseless killing.

Well it seems that I need to eat my words, as stated in an earlier post( they dont just give guns to everyone, or to that effect). Was told today by a bloke at work that a friend of his is now living in the city and decided to do her course as she still often comes back to the farm. She was the only one to pass strait up out of 18 people. The rest I was told were coached until they got the answers correct so they could then pass. If anyone needs to be told the answers to pass this course in no way shape or form should they be allowed to own a firearm. Shocked to the core but not surprised in this day and age.

Wouldn't surprise me the least.... I know of a fellow who is a big time Drug Dealer, never been caught, Cops know what He is up to and yes, he got his gun licence too.... Makes you Wonder
