Entry level detector

The at gold was designed as a nugget detector however not aimed or tested in our highly mineralized soils. I think its a trait of the VLF technology isn't it? Not coping with the hot ground?
I know it has descrimination however due to varying factors there is a chance you will miss the yellow.
I havnt used other VLF detectors. I chose the at gold due to it being a great VLF machine and based on extensive research.
That sounds like a great feature. I would always be worried about missing good targets though. If a bit of gold is the right shape, size or at the right depth this technology can quite easily assume its iron.
Interested to hear how it goes.

I've used a tdi pro and an SSP , along with the F1a4 and a 4k and 5k. must say I preffered the ssp for easy of running, but it all depends. I've not used a vlf...

Mainly gold or relics or 50/50?
where are you going to spend most of your time? does the area have highly variable mineralisation?
then pick a machine based on that.

SSp with the mods is said to be a good thing, cheap and light and somewhere between a 5k and a sdc2300 (others may disagree - all relative)
4k was a bit deaf, but simple to operate
5k was much better
F1A4 - this is the machine I kept for my use, has all the mods and is VERY sensitive to small bits on the 2nd 5 pulse timing , it also handles variable ground if channel 1 is selected in the 2nd 5 pulse and the 3 pulse timing...

depending on budget and what you can do yourself , ssp and f1a4 may be on the cards if you want P.I

Yes Mate it should do, I would Try the Relic mode with the Disc at around 2 at the most and see if that works but never go above 2.8 to 2.9 with the Trigger set in the middle, if that Don't work then flick the trigger forward but you will have to lower the gain A Little, Try That as it will give you a Faster SAT Speed, or use the prospecting mode, NOTE in this mode with the MXT the Hyper Sat part of the control will Add Depth Unlike on the GMT when you crank it up in the 7.5 to 10 Area,

I would Try Ground Balancing on the Iron Stone,

But it should handle it Ok

I've got a garrett at gold as well mate. Only used it twice briefly when away motorbike riding. Now that I've got the gpx 4500 I've actually dedicated some time to detecting.
The at gold is a great machine and one of the best vlfs in my opinion. However it really does struggle in hot ground. I just walked away from some spots when detecting because it was too irratic and thought every piece of ironstone was a target. It is more than capable of picking up the small stuff providing the ground is not hot. It easily picks up all the pieces I have found with the 4500 if they are close to the coil. However if I was using the at gold I simply would not have found them because the ground is quite hot where I've been detecting. Just something to consider.

I've got a Garrett AT Gold as well. I've had difficulty in the GT with hot ground in All Metal Mode. Dug too many hot pockets and hot rocks, and got sick of the irratic audio. However, I've found Disc 1 quitens it right down and still detects to reasonable depth. Haven't found any yellow stuff yet. Plenty of bullets and foil so figure it's just a matter of time.
How do you find the Iron Audio feature?
Do you trust it?
I've only had my machine a couple of months and been out for 3 5 hour sessions and still learning. Cheers

Gday mate, I don't completely trust the iron audio or the discrimination of any kind. I was able to get the at gold to miss a .3 gold nugget with iron audio and with discrimination. I think there's always going to be scenarios where the gold is at a certain depth, shape, size or the way its sitting that will confuse the detector into thinking it's junk.

Or anything I just need to go detecting to get my mind off loosing so much money

Use the $300 to track down & get your 5k back. That would be the best long term investment.

Take a look at the RACER or Fors Gold/Fors Core....they are starting to prove worthy and gaining momentum.

The MXT has no manual GB, and in our soils its a good thing to be able to manipulate the GB sometimes...when your not able to do this your only option is to lower the gain....lower the gain and kiss your sensitivity good by. The GMT has these abilities but due to its high frequency tends to highlight every hot rock. Both units suffer from not having proper volume levels, and are combined with the gain control instead....up the gain and you up the volume.

The MXT has the relic mode and has proven to be the better mode for coin/relic and gold hunting in our soils from my observation when comparing it with the others iv mentioned. However the RACER and Fors models offer a far better ability to unmask combined with their very tight/blending of the audio. These models also offer more gain ability and both offer manual GB.

The GMT will soon bring tears to your eyes if used as a park hunter looking for coins, while it has an analyzer feature, anything at depth will normally pull high if the ground is highly mineralized....a common trait with most VLFs, and not excluding the Fors and Makro models. Large flat rusted iron is a common enemy of most VLFs....most will signal it as a good target. This go's for very small flat rusted iron on the surface as well. The GMT due to its frequency wont pull targets at depth like the others mentioned, as impressive as it is for that frequency, it falls way short.
It will find every little bit of foil a park has to offer, chose to ignore it, and you run the risk of missing a ring. Comboed to the larger 14x concentric elip coil it does have some good depth if used as a park hunter, and is not as bad on the smaller foil type targets as the std DD. Bottom line tho, its primary a gold finder, not a park/coin hunter and lacks some of the features used for those hunting styles. The iron ID when used in the trigger forward position tends to false on many targets if the gain is too high.

I think the reason you hand considered it gone is because you never really had one to Beguin with did you lucky!!!???. No one in the saine mind would leave it this long without action and you claim you don't have the serial number anymore but in your other topic posts you sent them off before purchase via SMS to check for fakes and if stolen and you claim to have received verification SMS back to you claiming all genuine and in order. Feel free to put me back in my place and corect me but in my opinion.CHECK & MATE.

Found out 2 months later he left town the next day, Did a runner on a lot of people. Was involved in a serious car accident and is maimed for the rest of his life.

It still hasn't really hit me yet, I feel pretty shite at the moment, and you're right Doug I do work hard and I'm a very very honest person I never would have thought this would happen, I only said to him too look over it for me, I tried to ring him a few hours later, no response went there and he wasn't home, tried again the next morning no reply, didn't answer and wasn't home

His gf has blocked me on fb. I will still give him a couple days before I ring the police..

Things that really hits hard and hurts the most I haven't even had a good chance to use it or anything.. Worst part is all I have is the purchase recipt stating it was singed into my name the original store recipt was in the box so I don't even have the serial number anymore.. I deleted my bloody sms verification that had the serial number on it

Ok now I feel I may as well explain the reason behind why I left it so late to go to the police, I have known Joel for almost 12 years, he's a pot head but not a thief I would have and still do trust him with my life.. Some say I trust to easy but this isn't like him at all to do something like this, the serial number sent via sms I assumed was saved in my iCloud messages and recently restored my iPhone because I jail broke it and one of the tweaks I installed made my phone continually crash, I knew I'd lose all content hoping that my iCloud connection still worked before hand.. Only it didn't it saved my pictures from almost a year ago but nothing else.. My friend rob who sold me the detector in the first place is difficult even at the best of times to contact, Joel's Gf didn't block me on Facebook I was just so caught up in everything and when I c oil dnt find her on fb assumed she blocked me. But that wasn't the case apparently she hasn't had Facebook for over 2months now but I don't check on her everyday to know this I only searxhed for her when my mate Joel went walk about. The fact he hasn't been home could be due to him going back to work who knows all I know is I've put two thousand five hundred dollars down for a detector I've used for not even half an hour.. Why I gave it to my mate too look at was because I was so excited, I didn't even take the transfer and sales receipt out of the box.. There are many reasons why I haven't plastered his name all over every single forum and page related to gold on fb and what not and that's because I sincerly think he hasn't screwed me over but I. Could be too trusting

The fact that I'm now being questioned on here kinda Sucks I mean I'm going through hell thinking all kinds of f***ed up shite as it is and to be honest it does help having you guys as support but being doubted and having stupid accusations like I never owned it in the first place in a way your right I feel like I don't own it, reason being I've not even used it for 40mins how can I feel like I've still owned it I'm just trying to stop thinking so much because honestly it's burning a hole through my heart and the stress is phenomenal

I don't want anyone's sympathy it's my own fault but I'm trying to stay optimistic about it all and keep a level head.. Until the investigators or cib get back to me about what they've learnt I'll keep it between us on here and the police if for any reason it turns out he has taken it to profit for himself I'll hope I never got the poultice involved bcos Ill kick his head off five ways sideways.

Thanks Walshie. I went out again last weekend and put the iron audio to the test. After digging a 15cm deep hole only to find a hot rock I dropped my gold wedding band in the hole and covered it up. Don't tell my wife! The AT Gold picked up the ring loud and clear. With iron audio on it did grunt a little. Not like solid iron, but it could be quite misleading. Needless to say I don't put a lot of trust in the iron audio either. Spent a few hours between Waanyarra and Tarnagulla and then spent a few hours at Kingower. Still haven't found any of the gold stuff. Taking this Friday off work and heading back again for two days. Cheers

I appreciate you sticking up for me doug, I consider you to be one of the best blokes I've had the chance to get to know on this forum, I've spoken with you for quite a while now, I have rung a few people to try and get the serial number but without purchase date and original buyer.. It's like chasing a goose around and around, I knew rob got it second hand and without the box with the receipt of original purchase I can't get the info.. I'm waiting for rob to get back to me with the serial number so I can post it here in the stolen section
