Can't find an Aldi detecto anywhere and I'm going to hire a gpx5k for the weekend hopefully I'll go for a swing and find something, can they be tuned for smaller gold or just bigger bits?

The 5K is a beautiful machine, Just make sure you talk to some of our 5k user's here or Kidnap one of them for a day so they can get you up and running,

Good Luck

Ok I'll try my best at kidnapping him

Nenad does do lesson for people and seeing as He was/is A Minelab Test Pilot, there's no one the planet better Qualified. So I would grab his ASAP If I was You.

I've got a garrett at gold as well mate. Only used it twice briefly when away motorbike riding. Now that I've got the gpx 4500 I've actually dedicated some time to detecting.
The at gold is a great machine and one of the best vlfs in my opinion. However it really does struggle in hot ground. I just walked away from some spots when detecting because it was too irratic and thought every piece of ironstone was a target. It is more than capable of picking up the small stuff providing the ground is not hot. It easily picks up all the pieces I have found with the 4500 if they are close to the coil. However if I was using the at gold I simply would not have found them because the ground is quite hot where I've been detecting. Just something to consider.

That's extra I'm on a tight budget probably should be buying things I need for sluicing but I want a change for a couple days
Yeah it's not to bad actually. I did the training course not long ago, and including the detector hire and training it was only $125. That was the 5k. And they do training days on Fridays and Saturdays.

I'll only have it for the weekend, I would be intersted in a training day, but I'm not sure bcos that will be eating detecting time too and I wouldn't find anything in training

I'm gonna hang onto it mate, the misses will use it to have a swing. If you hunt around you can score yourself a bargain. I got mine a year or so ago for $350. I'm the type that will sit until I find a banga deal. I'm sure you can do the same, just takes time.
I'm sure the training day would be helpful and fast track learning, however if you spend the rest of the week researching settings you can become knowledgeable enough to use the machine for sure. Then its a matter of learning all the other aspects of detecting.
There's nothing wrong with using factory presets on the gpx as they are more than adequate to find gold. And just get familiar with the timings like I explained in the PM and you'll be cheering. Your first outing should involve a bit of playing around with the timings so you can see what they do and how they make the detector react on any given ground conditions.
Its probably a good idea to download a PDF version of the user manual as well just to familiarize yourself with setup, groundbalancing, timings etc.
It seems daunting to begin with, but once you've got the gpx in your hands and you can play around with it, it will all start to make sense.

Actually they take you out to a couple of different prospecting patches, to teach you what to look for and run you thru the settings and then unleash you on the bush. So you can find gold on the training days, a couple of people found gold the day I went.

The biggest issue in the gold fields is iron stone.
Where there is ironstone there is gold to be found.

Have you used other vlfs and made a comparison.

Have i used an at gold in iron stone infested areas?
Yes i have And I know what you are talkng about.

The xp deus has an iron volume with a dedicated gold
program. I will be taking it over the same area i took the
At gold to see whether the iron Stone detected comes
through as iron or a target.

This will Be an interesting test because on the deus you
can control The iron volume to really a really low setting
and if the ironstone comes through As iron then i know
What I would prefer to use.

Time will tell though. As always each to their own.
