"Friends Carol Clay, 73, of Pakenham and Russell Hill, 74, of Drouin left for a camping trip to the Wonnangatta Valley, north of Licola in Victoria's high country, on March 19.

Mr Hill's wife thought her husband was camping alone.

He was an experienced bushman and former logger who knew the area well.

He last made contact with his wife, using his high frequency radio, on March 20 from Wonnangatta Station and has not been heard from since."

Thanks HL - I thought Dr D was referring to the Carol Clay/Russell Hill mystery.

No, I meant the Drs missing in the NT that was linked to by Hard Luck, not the Carol Clay/Russell Hill one. That is a head scratcher for sure, and everyone will be interested in the full story, if it is ever solved.

Here is the latest news from two days ago on that one. This could be just speculation, or it is possible that going public at this stage is an investigative strategy.

An expedition to try and find Lasseter's Lost Reef" back in 2005 we traveled the Great Central Road and no where were we stopped for quarantine inspections?
Found this link and it appears there are still no manned stations, only bins for the honest travelers?
What is stopping anyone entering WA via this road carrying illegal goods or unauthorised entry in present times?

This was just taken off the Laverton Shire website. Don't think you sick Melbournites are considered essential.

Latest update on the Carol Clay and Russell Hill matter:

The disappearance of two Victorian campers has left police that baffled theyve turned to international experts for help.

Its been almost six months since friends Russell Hill and Carol Clay vanished while on a camping trip in the remote Wonnangatta Valley east of Melbourne.

Police are still keeping an open mind as to what happened to the pair but its feared they met with foul play at their campsite near Dry River Creek Track.

Campers found Mr Hills white Toyota Landcruiser with signs of minor fire damage at the abandoned site on March 21, but the examination of the fire scene by arson chemists was inconclusive.

The fire also destroyed their tent and damaged some camp furniture.

The Herald Sun reports detectives from the missing persons squad have now turned to overseas and interstate experts in their bid to solve the mystery disappearance.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper told the paper he could not go into detail about the nature of the foreign assistance sought but he said investigators had been making progress over the past few months.

Mr Hill left his Drouin home on March 19 this year and told friends he planned to visit various campsites along the Dargo River before exiting the region at Dargo on March 26.

He was last heard from on March 20 when he made a call via HF radio stating he was at Wonnangatta Station in the Victorian Alps.

Ms Clay, from Pakenham, told friends she was heading away and was expecting to return home on March 28 or 29.

Police believe the pair have travelled up through Heyfield and Licola, then into the valley in Mr Hills Toyota Landcruiser.

Detectives have been told that he purchased a DJI Mavic drone before going camping, which is still yet to be recovered.

Despite a number of searches since their disappearance, the pair have not been found or contacted family or friends.

Insp Stamper told the Herald Sun he could not see the pair staging their own disappearance.

Police would still like to speak to anyone who was in the Wonnangatta Valley on March 19 and 20.

Anyone with any other information regarding their disappearance has been urged to urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Unless there's some sort of family inheritance angle that we know nothing about, one possible scenario is that the couple have inadvertently witnessed something dodgy and the perps felt that 'dead men tell no tales'. Is it feasible that they've stumbled on a marijuana plantation in that remote area?
