Does anyone believe in the Lasseter myth/story?

I watched a doco on foxtel the other day that was on the Lasseter gold reef that is supposed to exit out the back of Alice springs somewhere.
It was mostly about his 80+ year old son who is still looking for it all these years later.
Does anyone think its there somewhere? or is it just a myth started by a so called dreamer and con man?
Anyone with a story or some facts to shed some light on the topic would be great. What do you think everyone??

That's one theory.
Another is that, having separated from his companions Lasseter was stranded when his camels bolted with all his stores and, for a while, was looked after by Aborigines in the Docker River area. The cave he is said to have inhabited is a tourist attraction. Finally, regarding him as as a useless mouth to feed it is said that the Aborigines pointed the bone at him. Believing that this would cause his death they then stopped feeding him and he died.
It is not certain that the human remains found later were actually Lasseter's and another theory is that he survived but where he went is anybody's guess.
All we really know is that Lasseter claimed to have discovered a very rich reef but was unable to substantiate that claim.

i am with you dave
not knocking what is said in the posts
but the reef would have been found by now
i am not a tech head ,but the systems they have today if i can call it that way, they would have found the reef by now
like i struggle to understand trilobite mapping, geo vic, georesglobe
i am not programmed/learnt/taught the tech side of things but there are very smart people out there that are and i say goodwill to them
sometimes i get a little bit cocky and open certain maps/files then it is wtf is this sh$$%,i have know idea what i am looking at and have no desire to try and find out
but give me a paper map that is different

Well either theory is entirely possible until one of us gets out there and has a look to
check if what I'm saying is accurate and I'm pretty sure I've got it.
But then again many others had the same thought

He was just a kid, 17 years old big noting himself and people believed him because they wanted it to be real.
He didn't actually turn up with pockets full of gold did he? If you found it would you have left it all there? Of course not, neither would anyone else including Lasseter.
Load of BS mate
