Whew, what a stinker of a day back at the Victorian coin field, feeling a bit dehydrate, though very happy with today's finds. Checking a few more tree locations, and the start of gridding the area produced some good old silver, including an 1879 vic shilling in extraordinary condition, 1887 6p, 1867 6p, 1874 3p, 1861 3p, 1921 3p, and an 1879 hp to round off the coins.

The shilling was found just aimlessly walking on my way back to the car, though interestingly it was pretty close to where the gothic florin was found on a previous trip.

The rest of the targets consisted of your typical 4 hole buttons, lead, projectiles, shotty shells, and half of a pocket knife.

Even better that I managed all these targets in 3 hours, so that was pretty good going in the heat, and one of my best hunts to date at this location. :)

I took lots of piccies, hope you enjoy them. :)

Wow nice GP that shilling is in excellent condition , are you gonna bicarb it or leave as is? I love finding silver just wish i could find more ;)

I'll probably leave the shilling as is, got a real nice grey tone to the whole coin, it really does look like it was dropped near new - pretty amazing for a 137 year old coin. Will have a go at cleaning up some of the poorer condition silvers

Very nice coinage, it's funny how people give up with certain targets. I'd dig bullet casings all day

Same here, they can also be useful for dating areas, as most of the shotgun shells date back to the 1800's and are always interesting to research.

Tried to get some better pics of the shilling, but my tablet camera leaves a lot to be desired on close ups.

Nice hunt mate.

I'm thinking of adding the xp to my collection.

I really want to see if the Ctx leaves anything behind.

You never know unless you try I guess. Personally I don't use the higher recovery speeds for the above mentioned location, as it is quite open and junk is relatively sparse (open paddocks). Even in the low setting it is still gets excellent target separation amongst whatever iron and non-ferrous stuff that's lying around, and also improved depth than the higher settings.

If you do think about getting one, I'd go for the 11" inch coil option for general purpose detecting, as it gets amazing separation for a larger coil, and still allows you to cover ground more effectively than the 9" coil. Aside from that, a new small elliptical coil is being released this year, so probably better off holding out for that one over the older 9" if you want an additional small coil.

You do see quite a few in the US that own both a ctx and deus, use probably depends on the sites they are detecting, plus the CTX is a better beach detector. :)

Thanks GP

I have seen a few videos on how the xp outperforms the ctx in iron infested ground. I'd like to try it myself as they don't mention what settings were used on the ctx. In ferrous coin mode the ctx would easily pick up items under iron as I have found hundreds of targets with coins under nails.

Just curious. The ctx can't be the best forever.

Got sick of sitting around twiddling my thumbs, so off for a run over a well trodden park with the Deus. Predecimals for the trip include 2 x 1943 hp, 1954 hp, 1926 hp, 1954 penny, 1952 ramshead shilling, 1943 6p and a 1957 3p. Still quite amazed at the condition of the 6p, those 925 silvers simply don't suffer the same oxidation issues of the later coins - thankfully.

The two pins were also a bit of a surprise, the blue one is a Girl Guides pin, and the other is an early enamelled Anzac Appeal pin, possibly WW2 era. :)
