This is a long shot but Here goes,

It could be related to t he bombing of Darwin by Japan & the cargoes , sunken ships in the harbour were carrying have polluted the marine life on the lower end of the food chain which in turn is eaten by the higher food chain
Marine Species as the heavier metals have leached into the sea.

Sorry guys. Had a nap before work.

Good guess Pete....
The Japanese submarine i-124. Sunk in 1942.
Due to war shortages, used mercury for ballast.
Nice and heavy, also can be pumped around the sub to assist with trim.
Was to be salvaged in the 70's, then again in 2010 (due to mercury leakage the 2nd time). Both times the Japanese Government claimed war grave status.

Your question Pete.

What was the make & model of car that first drove around the Australian continent &the year.it achieved this milestone.
This event was rerun in recent times with an accident which almost cost the driver & passenger their lives.

In the second half of 1925 two Citroen motor cars departed Perth, Western Australia, and one became the first motor vehicle to circumnavigate Australia. Mr Nevill Westwood and Mr Greg Davies departed in a Baby Citroen 5CV. Mr J Warner departed in a Citroen B type 10CV.

The first motorist to circumnavigate Australia, still remains a matter of interpretation today.

John Freeman driving his Citroen B type 11.4HP torpedo, and Shayne Harris travelling in his Citroen 5CV (7.5HP), are preparing to travel the footsteps of the 1925 trailblazers who first circumnavigated Australia.
