best I can find.
poor materials available to make inks?

This was the main issue of the penny red, with 1,578,630,720 stamps delivered for issue over the 8 years of sales. The stamp was printed by both Cooke and Harrison, and the wear and damage to the plate over the years gave rise to the many penny red varieties that exist. The paper used was a smooth paper, however problems with deliveries from England during the first world war required the use of alternative papers, as seen in the third issue, the rough papers.

The war also gave problems to the printers in terms of the materials needed for inks, it is this issue that the ASC lists 27 separate shades of the red ink used. Some of these are common, and some are quite rare. The Salmon Eosin, issued in November 1917 has 2007 catalogue value of $2250 FU and $20000 UHM.

Carry on without me if ya bored :)

Some fish in the waters near Darwin, where found to have very high levels of mercury.
Why is it so?

Correct RR , Ink was supplied from Germany , so they had to source local product & spent years trying to match the red colour. In the process thaey ended up with more than 400 shades of Red. At 1 time , the 4d orange had NO RED at all , so the stamp was lemon to lime in colour
