Well done guys. I can only imagine the number of people out there to come away from this topic with more knowledge than when they got here.

I'm terrible at history and always have been, that's the only reason why you don't see me getting involved in this topic very much, I do try though

Hey duck, to make things just a little more interesting, I'll throw in a few stubby coolers for you to use in this topic any way you choose, just PM who you want them to go to and I'll ship them off.

Nugget.

Thanks Nugget.
We surely all learn something.
I love to read, love history, love Australia. So great thread for me.
Plus trying to stump these guys is a great challenge too.

Allocasuarina luehmannii

The hardest wood on Earth is the Australian Buloke ("bull-oak"), or Allocasuarina luehmannii in scientific terms, with a rating of 5060. Buloke wood is used in making fencing, flooring, furniture, roof shingles and turnery. However, Buloke trees are slow-growing and found mostly in Western Australia

Purple Gidgee

Grows in far Western Queensland near Richmond and Julia Creek, where the climate is hot and dry.
The wood is very hard and weighing 1345 kg per cubic meter, is heavier than water. It is used to make fence posts because it is too hard for white ants to eat and bush fires to burn. Fence posts over 100 years old are still being found in perfect condition.

The wood is coloured green when cut and changes to brown as it dries. When the brown timber is exposed to the light it slowly turns purple. Only the brown heartwood changes, the pale timber and the bark remain the same.

Logs are dried naturally for 5 years prior to turning. Due to this timber's hardness, production is very difficult.

Nugget was close , so he can have a turn

I'm so unprepared for this. The wife has got me watching recorded TV most of the night so if someone else would like to step in for me tonight, I'll post something good up tomorrow. It would be greatly appreciated by Mrs Nugget .

Nugget.

Ok Nugget ill try and make you proud.
I'll keep it in line with my IQ level....
Which comic strip takes its name from a dormant volcano and National Park in New South Wales?

Warrumbunglers. Warrumbungle National Park is in central New South Wales, about 600 kms north-west of Sydney, and is popular with rock-climbers. The 'Warrumbunglers' features the Ritz Pie Cart (run by Gunna the goanna) with its totally inedible food, poor swagmen, and clever koalas.

During the Victorian Gold Rush of 1851 a tent city, known as Canvas Town was established. The area soon became a massive slum, home to tens of thousands of migrants from around the world.
