That's the bloke RJ, Captain John Brookes. His ship the Tryall, struck a reef near the Montebello Islands in 1622, some years before Dampier visited us.
I will have to have a read back through the thread to see just what has been asked. Your turn mate.

That's a LOT of reading Magilla. :D
Just about finished work. I'll post a question when I get home.

Just for fun a picture clue.

What is the link between these 2 ships? One was wrecked in California and the other sat on a beach that is now named after her for a long time.

: In 1606, Willem Janszoon of the Dutch East India Company landed the Duyfken near present-day Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula. He named the new land Nova Guinea and distinguished it from New Guinea, which he called Os Papua. To further complicate things, he named part of Os Papua Nieu Zelandt. Janszoon soon sailed home in a state of geographical confusion.

He actually also had 9 men form a landing party who were subsequently killed by members of the wik tribe when they tried to kidnap an aboriginal girl. Was actually a fair ways south of weipa In an area that i worked for a barramundi season.

Yeah with 4935 posts I would imagine there has been quite a few Questions asked. I actually worked at cape keer weer for 8 months on a commercial barramundi boat working the kirke river in 2004. Not much there with regards to the first landing

I will put another question up just to keep the thread moving along.

What small South Australian town played a big part in the Victorian gold rush and why?

Hope it hasn't already been covered.

Robe....A lot of Chinese miners landed there and travelled overland to the Vic goldfields to avoid a rather unfair tax when landing in the Victorian ports.

That is it, thought it might have come up before. Only just read about it, great story that shows how desperate the Chinese were to provide for their families back home. I don't know if I would be prepared to walk that far in an unknown land with no real roads.
