"The Tuena Gold Field" :)
.

.
The more new corners the better as then our mines will have a fair chance of being properly tried; there is room for thousands, aye myriads and plenty of all the necessaries of life at a very low rate; a man may live here for 10s. a week. The greatest harmony, order and regularity prevail, and seldom is there a case of drunkenness or disturbance.

Ha, tathradj is right ... I thought that the clue about a trove of information woul be too much of a hint. That site is seriously the most useful reference for old newspaper accounts of th various rushes. Given the bit about lack of drunkeness at Tuena, another hint would have been my story about putting on the wobbly boot at the last forum meet, thanks to too much red wine and inner circle OP rum.

Over to you!

DrDuck,
You the man.
The Dog on the Tucker box it is.

A couple of years ago I had to pick up a dirt bike from Gundagai.
We had breakfast at the Tuckerbox at Lake Tabourie and had lunch at the Tuckerbox at Gundagai.
Just thought I throw that one in. :D

I am one of Australia's tallest buildings of my type.
It took around 85 years to build me and to complete me.
I had to be redesigned and finished in a modern way.
My start was founded on gold donations from a very persuasive person.
What am I. ??

When ever I am over that way I always stop and have a couple of dog's eye's there as well. :)
I am sure I remember crossing the timber bridge in my younger days while we were visiting central Victoria.

If it is a cathedral Im going with St Patricks in Melb, no idea why except that it took 80 years to build and its the tallest building of its kind and it dates to the gold rushes.

You are all a bit to close for comfort. LOL
Keep trying.
It was wondered as to why such an edifice should be where it is.

It has to be the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo.

"Sacred Heart Cathedral is one of Australia's largest churches and the second tallest after St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne. It is an exceptionally large church for a provincial city cathedral in Australia and its construction was made possible chiefly through the estate of Henry Backhaus (1811-1882), a German from Paderborn and the first Catholic priest on the Bendigo goldfields. Backhaus was very skilled in financial matters and accumulated considerable property - not least through encouraging his gold-mining parishioners to contribute some of their findings to the work of the church. Backhaus left his wealth for the benefit of the church and enabled the cathedral, among other things, to be built."

"After a long interval, work recommenced on the cathedral in 1954 and was completed in 1977. "

Dr Duck,
You are my arch nemesis. LOL
Just wait until I find you around a camp fire with a bottle or 2, Maybe 3.
Over to you and well done.
Can't half tell I like Bendigo.

thanks Tathradj. St Andrews was just a guess, as I knew they only built the spires in recent times. Seems to have been common enough, as they just put them on the Goulburn Cathedral in the last few years. When I thought about your clues, it was obvious that the structure would have been on the goldfields, and Bendigo Cathedral was the first one that I looked up.

Now to put my thinking cap on!

I read and considered submitting Sacred hearts details yesterday and couldn't relate it to any of the clues. Mind you I was looking for cathedral built/started in the 1850's, built with the help of a gold enriched benefactor, not one started in the 20th century. Lucky we have Mr Duck. :)

Sacred Heart commenced construction in 1895, but wasn't completed until 1997.

Anyway, in the interests of keeping it going, here is a clue. As usual, I have not tested it for Google resistance, so it may be easy,

I am a town in NSW where, like most places, there was considerable excitement in the early 1850's about the discovery of gold.
It was decided to post a reward for anyone who could find gold in the vicinity. What is my name, and what is the story?
