Madge Gormley (1914-2003)
Rodeo Rebel
'Never thrown, never injured and never beaten'
Practising on the poddies
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Hayden, near Toowoomba, Queensland, Madge Gormley (nee Krause) learnt to ride at age three. She believed riding was in her blood, although she was the only member of her family who rode. Madge started buckjump riding while "moonlighing", or rounding up cattle at night, practising on the poddy calves.
First professional buckjump ride
Although she became heavily involved with horses throughout her teenage years, Madge did not have her first professional buckjump ride until she was 23 years old, respecting her parent's wishes.
Madge joins Tex Morton
In 1942, at the age of 29, she began her rodeo career, with Tex Morton at the Tex Morton Show, where she rode in front of large crowds. Throughout World War II, she went on to travel all around Queensland and New South Wales, riding under the name Madge Bratby,(her first husband) where she says she earned "top money for the time". She claims to have never been thrown, injured or beaten.
In the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame
From 1945 until 1950 Madge travelled with the Queensland Wild West Stampede. She gave up riding at the age of 37, riding for the last time under her married name Madge Gormley, at Warwick. Madge died in December 2003. She currently features in a display at the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame.
