Ive never been that into opal but I discovered the joy of it this week when I shaped and polished a few bits of rough I had in my Dads box. Its wonderful stuff to work by hand.
Very hard to photograph.
The free form shapes pretty much maximised what I could get out of what I had and the colours out in the sun are amazing.

I have been cleaning up a small bucket of opal chip's..

Got small glass bottles with cork top to place the opal Chip In to..

Thanks LW. Was my first go at Opal and yes that iron stone makes some nice red mud. Did it all on the diamond plates Ive been using with a worn out piece of 1200 wet n dry to polish them. Im pretty happy with how they turned out but now I have track down some more material to work with.

Been away from the machine for a while, needed to get some urgent renovations done as our daughter was spending a month with us while doing her last practice session to complete her nursing degree. That's out of the way now as are Channel 7, who've filming at the building I manage for the last 8 weeks. Damned out of control juggernaut and causing me no end of grief for no financial reward to the Body Corp only problems :argh:

So had a relaxing weekend on a nice little Garnet for a client, ended up with a 2ct stone which really catches the fire in the right light.

I think I might cut something really special next, been waiting to start this one for a while:

This is one end of the rough, the other is even bigger and will come later.

At 24.25ct the stone has been cleaned of all inclusions and has had a basic preform, think it's going to be pretty special though will end up a bit dark as it has a green cross table
