My brother recently did some kite cuts with his New England Smokey Quartz and Citrine and had them wire wrapped at the local gem show, they looked awesome and something I have put on my must learn list.

I like the setting on FB as well ?

Tailormarc there is a serious amount of detail and cost in that pendant but it does look spectacular. Would I be correct in thinking that the setting is Indian or middle-eastern?
Below is the pyrope garnet Dihusky cut for me a few months back. :Y: :gemstone: I designed the pendant and got a local silver smith to do the work. :Y:

Made this tonight; a relic detectorists adaptation on how to display gems prior to setting them.

Edit......Also had a play with a larger setting and coin but I think the sixpence will work better with bigger stones, unless you are gifting one to a sheep farmer layful:

Can't believe that it's been over 2 years since I last posted on here, I never really disappeared I've kept looking, and playing with the stones

Been sorting out the work area the last couple of days and took a couple of snaps

I just noticed the rose quartz has a star

And teaching myself to facet

Its been a bit quiet on PA for stone cutters lately ( hopefully because everyone is out looking for rocks to cut ) so I thought Id have a crack at my own. Got an interesting piece of Smokey with stripes, bubbles and veils, hand worked it with wet and dry sandpaper, 120grit through to 1200 then polished it with toothpaste on leather.

That really nice, come up a treat using old time techniques. Great example of what can be done without fancy machinery, sort of thing one can work away at around a camp fire when it's too wet to do anything else:Y:

Finished off this green tourmaline last night, darn crack opened up and a big chip of stone flew off the crown. The original crystal was sawn in half along a crack line, so you get to see a before and after of the same crystal. The second piece has some even more challenging characteristics but I think I will try to cut it with the hope that is stays in one piece.

Decided to half the crown thickness and chase the crack out as best as I could, unfortunately a significant inclusion takes up a quarter of the stones surface but I am very happy with the outcome. At 2.45ct it is large enough to let the light dance through the large table facet and pick up a rainforest of green colours when moved around. Shame I cannot share the experience of seeing this one in its full glory.

I could possibly recut this stone to remove the majority of the inclusions but would end up with a significantly smaller stone, but it would be absolutely spectacular.

One thing is for sure, I will be on the look out for more tourmaline to cut.

Ouch, that's really given you some grief 8.( Beautiful colour and clarity,... go for the re-cut, size ain't everything! big crack in that rough piece but you should be able to get a nice Hexagon out of it.

Bummer for that crack Wally, but the finished stone is super nice! I'd say leave it as is and see after you facet the second half of the crystal.
