Was chatting to an ex SEC Power Station Electrician a few years back and what he was telling me about Latrobe Valley plants and comparing the efficiency of the three
largest that were all running at the time, a very simple solution was available to reduce CO2 emissions by ensuring the most energy efficient units were online in a
priority order. Could have delivered CO2 reductions without job penalties and higher taxes.
The closure of Halzewood was fairly political and Tony Abbot made a good suggestion of a staged closure taking out individual units at a time as replacement
generating capacity came on line from renewable projects. In true form the media and all its ill informed followers shut down his proposal. Within weeks many portable Diesel generating units were mounted around various locations in the state as emergency back up for peak demand periods. I have noticed many around the Bendigo district, the CO2 footprint of having to haul fuel to these would be immense. There was also a significant turbine failure at Heywood Gas fired Power Station not long after the closure of Halzewood along with some major faults at Loy Yang.
Very little is understood of how the States Grid works by the majority of Victorians who expect a first world power Grid while demanding a poorly and rushed transition to renewable energy generation in order to silence Alarmists.
I think we need to listen to the engineering experts that run the system.
Have another friend at work who knows a senior Engineer at Loy Yang and AGL have a lot of technology they were wanting to retro fit to Loy Yang, the government is refusing to listen or accept their proposals.
