GST isn't a tariff or a duty - it's a national goods and services consumption tax which is now applied uniformly, regardless of order value. You can thank Gerry Harvey for that change. If I remember correctly, before GST all imports over $200 were subject to Customs Duty.

The limit was previously $1,000 I got a side imaging sonar from the USA for $995.00 When the AU$ was at parity with the US$.
