In which Grand Hotel that pre-dates The Savoy in London, The Plaza and The Waldorf Astoria in New York, The Ritz in Paris, and Raffles Hotel in Singapore, did an Australian Prime Minister keep Suite 306 for many years?

What was the hotel originally named, and who was the Prime Minister?

Sorry about the late reply folks.

I'd love to say you got it Flowerpot - but the question was, what was the hotel originally named?

Aahhh ok Megsy, I see, back to goggle for me.

The Grand Coffee Palace
then

The Grand and nicknamed the Duchess of Spring Street.

OK, now it's getting tricky. Yes, it does seem to have different names, depending on the source.

But I think Flowerpot got The Grand first.
I read it was 'The Grand Heritage Hotel', but that was me mis-interpreting the headline, I think. Doh! Sorry about that Flowerpot!

Having another read, I now believe it was The Grand Hotel to start in 1883, when it was built.
Then when they turned it into a booze-free hotel, it became known as The Grand Coffee Palace.
Then 10 years later they re-instated the liquor licence and it went back to The Grand Hotel.
Then in 1923 it became The Windsor, named in honour of His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, who attended a luncheon there.

And it is a magnificent old world hotel - one of my favourite places in Melbourne - if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend a visit back to the bygone era of grand hotels. They just don't make them like that anymore!

Over to you Flowerpot! :Y: :)

Ok cool, thanks Megsy.

My trivia questions are
WHAT SONG ARE THESE LYRICS FROM AND WHO IS THE BAND THAT WROTE AND SINGS THEM?
