A back pack trommel, It still needs a little refining, but works well.
Its a little heavier than expected at 35kg but i couldnt find a lighter gearbox suitable for the job.
the drum is 800mm x 250mm with an angus mackirk sluice and a small honda engine.

That is magnificent - well done. Less the honda, what sort of $ did you spend if I may ask?

Thanks Loamer,

to be honest i'm not sure what it cost me as i had everything laying around the shed, including the honda.
The only thing i had to buy was the small sprocket on the gearbox which was $13.00.

I'll take it up the bush this weekend and if it goes as good as my other trommels i'll start making a few to sell.

Cheers

It has amazed me the ingenuity of the people on this forum. This and their willingness to share keep up the good work, it is really great to see.

Look forward to seeing peoples results from the field. This is where the real test will come from. Awesome !

Love your work hardyakka and some impressive tig welding there i might add, i get my reduction gear boxes from melbourne machinary wharehouse they are quite light and robust and he will set them to match the speeds of motor vs trommel while your on the phone calling through your order................ 8)

Thanks dwt, I'll look them up now, the gearbox on that unit is 7kg. I'm sure there is something on the market at least half that weight that would be able to handle the load of that engine

very impressive.. Best one yet me thinks .. The way these things are progressing it will not be long and someone will sort a way to use the water to turn the trommel and do the wash leading to a simpler(yours is very good) and lighter unit.. nice work... :)

Thanks again dwt, i just got off the phone to them, i'll head down there next week and have a look at what his got, very helpfull on the phone.

Thanks kawman, i'd be keen to see that, a water powered trommel.

Hardyakka that is an impressive looking unit indeed. That thing should chew through a fair bit of earth i'd recon.

Kawman, I'm fairly sure I've got the water powered trommel sussed out. I mentioned the idea in a DIY thread on here last week but was sort of put off by being told it was illegal to use coz its still powered.....???? If people want to get their hands on water powered trommels then I might get a prototype going soon.
