Hey guys don't know if it's rude for such a newbie to start a new thread so upfront apologies :( but...
My daughter (9yrs) posed an interesting question and I'd like your thoughts.
With the current restrictions on movement and social activity being if I'm correct reasons to leave your home are work, medical needs ,obtaining essential supplies or exercise.
My girl asked " daddy when we go hiking it's our exercise right so if we go hiking on the weekend to our spot on the river where we almost never see anyone else and we had our pans in our hiking packs and we tossed a couple of pans when we had a break would that be illegal"
So my question is is this a smart way to get outdoors with my girl or a self indulgent bending of the rules to pursue our hobby.
Your thoughts would be appreciated. ;)

I'm not going to say that I am right or wrong.... but....

Here in QLD they have shut down the waterways and impoundments.
However, the Health Minister has just clarified and said, if you need to travel on a waterway, that's ok, work.. ok too...
If you wish to go fishing for food for your family, that's OK as well...

In each and every case, seperation rules apply as in 2 people only, or a family unit.

So they are shutting down water skiing, jet skiing etc and larger gatherings in the lead up to Easter I believe.(?)

If you wanted to hike, or walk in the name of exercise, I'd say your proposal is fine?
Panning, to make a dollar or two for your family? Maybe??
(Like fishing, allowed, but no guarantee of a fish??)

Well your hiking to exercise maybe within the law, depending on the distance from your home, but hiking to a location to pan for gold is really unnecessary travel I would think.

You put the 'Pan' in 'Pan'demic. :p

Seriously just wait a few weeks or even a couple of months.

Longer, if necessary.

Lead by example, be a good dad, if you act selfish then you'll rear selfish kids. In an economy that may be ok but the community needs you, the adult, to show the child the meaning of the greater good.

Would depend whether you're hiking/panning locally to your main place of residence or whether you travelling out of town to hike/pan?
If local ok
If out of town - No

At least one State Premier (Victoria) has provided an answer on this to the PMAV.
He was asked:

Can I go prospecting?
If local to the area - yes (limited to your town).
Practice self distancing requirements etc. so one other but take 2 cars. Limit your time outside.
If not local - NO Stay at home. This will be policed & fines issued.

Can I go camping in the bush?
NO

G'day Wolfpack welcome to PA  what state are you in if in Victoria here is the Exempt Rivers and tributaries list that excludes all methods of prospecting and fossiking.

https://earthresources.vic.gov.au/licensing-approvals/recreational-fossicking/where-you-can-prospect-and-fossick/rivers-and-streams-where-you-cant-fossick

If in any other state best you check the regulations.

As for the current restrictions again depending on the state you live and your primary location. If your in a metropolitan city your up ***** creek and will only be able to pan ***** if the chosen location isn't regulated to say you can't. Once the virus restrictions are ended its still just as important as now that you make yourself familiar with the state regulations before heading out. All the best when you get a chance to get amongst it with your daughter :perfect: gold's nice no matter the price, memorable times with your kids are priceless and just as good :)

Giddyup ;)

So got a plan
My brother has 400 acres with 3 seasonal creeks isolated area unoccupied 20 mins from home can go gate to gate with no human contact spend all day ( on 4oo acres) with NO human contact bar my kids no fuel stops no stops full stop.
Property is in Forbes gold field region unoccupied for approx 60 yrs.
What say the prospecting community should we hit it.
:/

Thanks all
Had already decided bad idea and thanks for the heads up about the target on prospecting. Being new to the game it's hard to read into the political state of things.I need to be aware that thinking out loud can cause harm indirectly.
A kick in the bum don't hurt when you mess up apologies all
:(

Mabasco, recheck PMVA sight. NO prospecting of any kind in Vic, and you must own the Private Property you wish to Prospect on. Parks and Dwelp have already caught a Victorian metal detecting in Maryborough area. His details were given to Police and he is now $1650 lighter.

Spot on Leroy about the restrictions :Y: bet the prospector will be wishing the choice activities for the day were a different thought :argh: worth putting this up in the metal detecting threads too.

Felt like a bit of a goose last thing I want to do is make things harder for the old hands. :fistpump:

My post was made on 31/03/20 & current on that date. Things have changed yes & it was noted elsewhere on the forum by myself + others.

Hey all would it be cool if some more experienced than me maybe started a thread with their thoughts on why prospecting is in the crosshairs of the authorities.when my daughter decided it would be cool I had no idea of the political problems I thought you could just by a pan swish some gravel and if it had gold step up to a sluice or banker.
How much I have learnt :( .
From what I've seen the average prospector don't show up with a 30 ton excavator and a mill.
I know there's heaps of threads about the restrictions that have been imposed on you guys over the years but it would be cool to hear the opinions of the old hands of why people want to restrict a bunch of people with detectors, sluices and pans.
I can't see how we'd send Rio tinto broke. :Y: :N:

Yes mabasco, didnt note the date. Dont know what its like in NSW at the present time, things are a bit confusing but I know that VIC is completely off limits to any type of prospecting, even on PP (unless you own it). I agree too much Sabre Rattling.

Wolfpack I don't think you should be apologising for anything or admitting fault to anyone. In planning your activity you gave social distancing real consideration which is what most people need to do. Your thoughts were not wreck less or irresponsible or stupid. If the law allowed there would be no problem going through with your plan. Virtually no threat to you or your family or anyone else. Lots of PA members think that people who have ideas like you are the big threat and they rant and carry on with name calling etc. and shouts of "What don't you understand about staying at home?" The real threats however are the lady's groups hosting coffee mornings at home now that cafes are closed. Believe it or not there are blokes all over the state having mates around for afterwork beers in the shed now that clubs and bars are closed. You may find it hard to believe but there are also lots of high risk people ( recent overseas travellers) hosting welcome home parties. They're the stupid, inconsiderate ones that deserve people's wrath and anger. If the numbers continue to go down and the government relaxes regulations we will need thinking people like you to continue thinking and practicing social distancing to keep infections under control.

Cheers Bob.
