Unfortunately it may have been a hoax and may still well be ............................ BUT nothing to say a few oxygen thieves haven't put it into practice.
Quite a few decades ago between Ayers Rock (yes it was named that back then) and Coober Pedy a group of friendlies tried to relief me of my car and possessions whilst I was still in it So nothing new as far as car jacking goes but they were not going to have my trusty FB  . Pretty sure the arm that came thru my window to take the keys from my ignition would ever work as it should again. ;) All one could add is for anyone travelling, especially in remote areas please do keep your wits about you as any assistance can be a long way away :Y:

"While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it."

Is this your text and experience Bogger? or just the 1st sentence of the 1st paragraph regarding the supposed warning.

The only reason I ask is the suggestion of this being a hoax that seems to have originated overseas. If it is your experience then it's confirmation the world has gone crazy :(.

No this is not my personal experience .......................... refer first line of previous post.

Copied and pasted as received only.

But never the less hoax or not to use your words this may suggest that the world has or is going crazy http://www.mambolook.com/australia/carjacking

I never heard of the baby seat scam, but the red light trick does happen. In parts of PNG and South africa this is just standard practice.

I remember about the red light camera car jackings in South Africa, a smart man went and developed a flame thrower system on the sides of his vehicle that would deter (roast) the car jackers. Should make the system legal here. ]:D 8)

Cheers

There's always something going on here but you don't always hear about it

i remember hearing about the 'baby seat on road side' thing around 15 years ago, same as 'locals' throwing babies onto roadways to get people to stop in some remote areas, it is a hoax, not to say it hasn't happened but if you are on Facebook you hear about these things all time time, in saying that tho keep your wits about you my friends, if in doubt bail out...
cheers
Jamie

Ah the memories of a great dog , reckon we came across a similar crew 1985 climbed the rock during the day then set up camp about 100 klm's out over night . About 3 am was woken by the thumping of a 308 which pulled up right at the back of our ute camper . Always carried a rifle back then and had been warned so opened up back door with rifle and flash light to find a local fella knocking off my BBQ which was stashed under the camper , let off a round into the air which only had two more fellas jump out of the HQ must have known I wouldn't shoot them didn't care about the gun ! Enter my staffy x heeler , a huge dog with a neck like a tree trunk who carried around full bessa blocks for fun. Latched onto the side of the fella with his head under my camper and locked on , the other two fellas jumped back into the car not caring about their chewed up cobber started the car and reversed up and away with bloodied Ol mate with a piece missing running after them . Packed our gear and left straight away , funny now but quite scary back then . Without the dog who knows how it would have ended " Bacchus " was his name so still carry his memory with me as my forum name . Sorry off topic but Boggers story brought back memories of a great dog :)

Ha ha same same Bacchus as yours did for me :Y: .................... was a bit more to the story ....................... I had just finished 12 months ring barking on the stations at the time and had a bowie knife that had spent every smoko during that time on an oil stone ............... she was like a razor ;) The arm came thru the window and a flash of steel in the dash lights and we got bone without a problem. Took off and must have drove a 100 mile towards Coober Pedy as wasn't game to pull over ( I was 19 and my little chickee back then 17) until we came across a group of blokes taking homes into the mission schools so we pulled in to camp with them. Now the guys were sleeping in the homes during the night and after a few sherbets one of them got up to stroll outside to take a leak but forgot the door was 6 ft off the ground ................... result one broken leg :D In the light of day had a look inside the car and we had blood all over the hood lining....................... I'd say he was hurtin :Y:

Funny what brings memories back .................... they had blocked the road and as I pulled up it was just getting on dark and could see more and more bodies emerging from the shadows. It was a wet night and the red slurry had basically turned the lights into little more than a dull glow.
But as these bodies emerged from the shadows around the car you could smell the cheap plonk in the air. Anyways to this day when I smell the same smell the memories drift back :) :) :)
