I have just looked into it really quickly and ran a couple of tests of my own, I found that exif data is still being stripped out of images that are uploaded directly to the forum. When it comes to externally hosted images though, the removal of exif data is up to the hosting provider as the forum software and admin of this site has no control over that.

I would be interested in knowing the exact method in which your test image was uploaded, just in case there is an image upload scenario / method which is being overlooked in the exif data stripping process.

Cheers,
Nugget

Nope - downloading the image I can still read my lat/long and other data - I will PM you a screenshot of that - so that's a fail in my opinion.

Rgds

Hey Barry i tested your image 5 times snd got "no gps data" have you tried clearing your cache in between testing it?

I just installed the plugin and ran it against your image Bazza and no data can be found.
Using Firefox. :)

I just had a light bulb moment ....

What if when I download the image - I , as the owner are perfectly entitled to receive an unstripped copy which would mean that the data gets stripped for a non owner on the download..... Just a thought.

The way to prove this is to email my downloaded copy to someone else to check and see if my theory is true.

G0lddigg@ would you be up to that - if so PM me your email address

Cheers

Hi Guys,

I have figured it out because the file I uploaded earlier has now been stripped of EXIF data some 1 hour 45 mins later (but I still have various copies with EXIF data I downloaded 10 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour after posting it) , so I think there are 2 things at play here.

1. the file "owner" has a period of time where the unaltered file is still available if it is downloaded.
2. "Non owners" will only be able to access a stripped version.

A check of the 3 file sizes I downloaded show that the stripped version I downloaded a few minutes ago is almost half the size (same pixels though) and contains no EXIF data.

the behaviour is odd and confusing but I dont now think there is any cause for alarm.

Phew - I thought I was going mad for a while.

Cheers

Barry

Ok,
Here is Bazza's image.

Now to have a look if the data is stripped.
I did not edit it as I am relying on the forum software to do it's job.
.
.
OK,
I installed the Firefox plugin and ran it accross the forum's uploaded image.
Here is the result.
No GPS Data.

I would say that in your case being the rightfull owner, The image is associating with what you see.
After a while of browsing around and a few disk writes the association does not render.
I myself personally and without offense to the forum check every thing I upload.
Some times things go wrong but a simple check straight after uploading any thing is all it takes to keep yourself happy.
Even go as far as running something like CCleaner then rebooting after will show any Gremlins.
I am a level 2 Field Services Engineer in IT.
Software does get on my goat sometimes. LOL

Thanks doug, I don't honestly think we have anything to worry about , seems to be a matter of ownership and timing, Nugget sent me a PM and suggested the original is cached for the uploader/ "owner" for up to 90 mins so that makes sense.

Anyway I think the deletion of the thread is a wise move in case.

Yep I used to be a Radio engineer and had experience with Linux and Unix systems so understand quirks with software lol

cheers

Barry
