A bit of better news came through today. NAPFA have been working hard behind the scenes & are continuing to on this + other areas of concern in NSW.
NSW Crown Lands have decided to reverse their decision & will now be allowing fossicking in both of the lots they directly manage (shown in blue shading below):
The 2x lots managed directly by NSW Crown Lands are shaded blue above.
I'm hopeful Tamworth Regional Council will confirm fossicking will be allowed again at Swamp Creek Camping Reserve (shaded purple above) soon following NSW Crown Lands lead.
(Confirmed by attached letter from Kevin Anderson MP, Member for Tamworth)
Unfortunately all red shaded areas on both maps are managed by Local Land Services & at this stage will remain as "No Fossicking".
The yellow shaded area is still:
The Northern sections are under an Aboriginal Land Claim & fossicking is not permitted.
The Southern section is managed by the Bowling Alley Recreational Reserve Trust who haven't responded to enquiries. Unknown.
On 17 October 2024, the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure – Crown Lands (the Department) reversed the fossicking ban on the two directly managed Crown reserves to maintain tourism within the local area. In consultation with the NSW Resources Regulator and other agencies, the Department will erect signage that will detail the permitted fossicking activities that can occur on the two Crown reserves The Department will also work with Tamworth Regional Council to ensure fossicking information provided through its website and tourist information centres is consistent with the Fossicking Guidelines. Other areas within the immediate vicinity of the upper Peel River (especially around Nundle and Hanging Rock) also remain open for fossicking.
