Put back the sport 10 years in Australia with that stupidity. It will cost the game millions of dollars, so maybe the leadership team should donate their wages + IPL fees to grass roots cricket. Smith should be suspended for a year just for stupidity

And I was silly enough to think that the "underarm" incident was as low as an Australian cricket captain could go, boy was I wrong there

Trevor Chappell's underarm delivery at the time was perfectly legal within the bounds of the game, originally all deliveries were underarm or lobbed, then in about 1760 as cricket pitches became better, they were pitched similar to baseball. It was not until 1835 that roundarm deliveries, originally perceived as being "******" and unfair became legal. Underarm and Lobbing continued up until about the end of the First World War.

The thing was they never became illegal, just unused deliveries because of the quality of modern day pitches, until Chappell pulled that stonker out of the bag.

What happened last night is a whole new level of shame.

Geez... what happened to the good old days of spraying a bit of Mr Sheen on your pants

Hard to tell our kids that there heros are cheats .I have captained cricket clubs over the years cant get my head around the fact the leasst capped player was given the job of doing the cheating tells me everyone in that team new .HE is a batsmen he knows the best way to **** a cricket ball is hit it a lot and that about it .Our countries captain showed no faith at all in what could be argued the best bowling attack in world cricket .Heads must roll

No, Smith should be out. Gone. Go play snooker or something.
The whole 'Leadership group' that hatched or knew about this should be gone. BANNED.
It happens in every other sport, cheating is as bad as performance enhancing drugs or throwing a game... its cheating and you are GONE...

I agree with a post up above, if half the team has to go, so be it.
If we have to go into (if we can get back in?) to the world series as wooden spooners, we should.

Whilst that team exists as is, I wont watch them play ever again.

Just put the womens cricket on tv instead for 12 months.

It was a horrible attempt of cheating :N:

Shocked ? No not really:rolleyes: most bowlers since day dot have had some way of playing with his balls.

bottle tops, car keys, boiled lolly with sand , hair gel , Vaseline, polish, rings, teeth , shoes its all been done ,maybe just the leg where they rub the ball ,crazy how quickly some blokes pants get the red off the ball.

Surely our team was good enough to win without taking sandpaper to the ball.

I am not sure that Smith and the other players involved actually understand how important the cricket team are to us everyday Aussie people. We see them as role models for us and our kids. They represent the values that we hold dear. Hard work, matemanship, perseverance under adversity and of course honesty. The game is not about money or winning, its about how well that players are able to portray those attributes under difficult conditions. Steve Smith was superb in the Ashes Series. The way that he stood tall and guided his team was outstanding. It was a very proud moment that I will never forget. What happened to the man that we admired and trusted? Was he naive about the decision HE made or was the pressure to perform and win that strong that players felt as though they had no option? Politicians and even the Primeminister can make horrible mistakes and be forgiven but I doubt that we will ever see the cricket team in the same light again. I can still remember Trevor Chappell bowling underarm all those years ago. I know that we still see that as a low period in our history. This latest incident will never be forgotten or forgiven. The sadness, anger and betrayal that we all feel will stay with us all for a long time. This is a wound that will not heal easily.

'10' minutes ago they held CA to ransom for more money??? WTF??
I tell you what, Social media has gone ballistic about this.... vast repercussions I would say...

Australia captain banned for Joburg Test and Cameron Bancroft given three demerit points for role in ball tampering scandal

Steve Smith has been suspended for the fourth Test in Johannesburg by the ICC after he was charged by the head of the governing body for "conduct contrary to the spirit of the game". Smith was charged by ICC chief executive David Richardson, fined 100 per cent of his match fee and given a one-Test ban. He will have four demerit points on his record. Smith stood down from the captaincy for the remainder of the third Test, with Cricket Australia launching an internal investigation before levelling its own sanctions. David Warner has also stood down for the vice-captaincy, but has not been hit with any ICC sanctions. Tim Paine was installed as interim captain.

Opening batsman Cameron Bancroft, who was caught trying to alter the condition of the ball on day three of the third Test in Cape Town, was fined 75 per cent of his match fee and handed three demerit points. "The decision made by the leadership group of the Australian team to act in this way is clearly contrary to the spirit of the game, risks causing significant damage to the integrity of the match, the players and the sport itself and is therefore 'serious' in nature," Richardson said.

"As captain Steve Smith must take full responsibility for the actions of his players and it is appropriate that he be suspended. "The game needs to have a hard look at itself. In recent weeks we have seen incidents of ugly sledging, send-offs, dissent against umpires' decisions, a walk-off, ball tampering and some ordinary off-field behaviour.

"The ICC needs to do more to prevent poor behavior and better police the spirit of the game, defining more clearly what is expected of players and enforcing the regulations in a consistent fashion. "In addition and most importantly Member countries need to show more accountability for their teams' conduct. "Winning is important but not at the expense of the spirit of the game which is intrinsic and precious to the sport of cricket. We have to raise the bar across all areas."

Both Smith and Bancroft accepted their sanctions.

Cheers David
