You don't need much, especially for starting out. There are kits and things that you can buy, but I'm as cheap as they come and go with minimal. I just added it all up, its exactly $100 worth in that photo there! :) Hmm.. I may have left out the ice-cream, add $4.

bloody oath, spear and jackson area great i'm converted to kobalt now as they have a nicer point and a lip at the rear. But i wouldnt hesitate to buy another wide mouth I did move alot more material with the old girl
still miss my old girl though.... think she caught a branch coming down the pyronese ranges one afternoon.

casper - Havnt used a post hole digger yet as they look that bit too small and I move a lot of gravel, but I'll see if I can borrow one just to have a go at it!

G0lddigg@ - I didnt think of the wear on my thongs ( lol ) but they do get a wear mark and crack from digging on the sharp edge of the shovel. I love the ol Spear and Jackson, I can help but say the brand as if Sean Connery was saying it: "Schpeer arnd Jarckshon"

Balx - I don't find it to be much of a struggle carrying the bag / shovel on the shoulder for the short trips close to the car. I do use a hiking bag for when I am doing a bit more like taking a sluice out or going to an area where I may have to turn on 'survival mode'.

If you want to clean out a deep narrow "shoot" (chute) between two boulders i'd be putting the round mouth aside and reaching for the trenching spade ;)
