Went for a swing today at Baja state forest was swarmed with march fly's the hole time these things where attacking me left right and centre,, makes it hard with a pick in one hand and a detector in the other, is there any other way to deter them? tried bushman's 40% deet and off spray nothing worked at all!! no nugget would be worth the trauma I went through today haha cheers

Bloody things would not leave me alone yesterday and I was smothered in bushmans. The little *******s prick thier mouth into you.. and even worse...when you miss them..you've then gotta deal with the sting from your own slap.. mega pain  at least I know how to dance like a russian or octoberfest performer now! Hup! Hup! Hup!

Hahahaha thats funny :D

It's a sign of rain coming fellas,.... they looking for blood before the rain comes to youse ! ;) :D

I was nearly lifted away by them at Tom Groggin a couple of years ago. They like dark clothing especially blue so wearing light coloured loose clothing might help. I also read somewhere that they have trouble landing on patterns like small checks as they can't judge the distance to land. Also wearing a dark blue hat might help divert them away from the fleshy bits. I've never been able to test all that theory out just read it after being traumatised myself so no implied warranty ;)

haha I know the place real well (tom groggin) yeah really bad there still

My kelpie hates them more than i do . And will hunt them down .

Deet is the best to use on those buggers .

Wouldn't they be January flush?
When I go to one of my favorite haunts this time of year they are so ferocious they attack my Ute.
It sounds like some one is shooting my car with a slug gun so I learned pretty quickly not to get out of the car.
ps: my Ute is white in color

Haha my rodeo is white also! same thing when I reach my spot it seems I have collected 100 march flyes on the way, and then when I get out I get swarmed, makes me think of buying a bee suit to detect in..

Maybe they are hanging onto the car till you get where you,re going and you've only killed a hundred, like white car hitchhikers.

The ones up here love blue, no joke, a blue esky, blue singlet, blue king gee stubees = misrable blue bloody day!
Years ago, near cairns, went fishing for sootys and jungle perch, no insect repellent at all, spent most of the day up to my neck in water, where the bas tards couldnt bite me, but they still hit my face, what a day! Dont feel them on me untill they bite either, god I hate em!

Yep, agree with that davent, they are attracted to the colour blue.

Can't do much about em except cover up. The deet does diddly as you've found. Least they're not as bad as WA where they'll bleed livestock dry. Find that detecting late evening can help as they tend to quiten down as the sun sets.

One you can wear like a gazebo that goes right down to the ground,... look like a grandfathers whiskers tree moving across the ground from a distance.

This may be a bit inappropriate but if there really bad ( I have had them nearly make me totally loose it ). One of those full body coverings that some wear would be quite handy in these situations. Maybe someone could make them and market them as a prospecting uniform for warmer months.
