In my opinion there is no better fish for the table than John Dory, it is the absolute best.

You ever tried Mangrove Jack? It so far is the best I've eaten ;)
yeah, gotta agree, #1 mangrove jack, #2 Coral trout, #3 King George Whiting, #4 john Dory. But no matter what, they all have to be FRESH and straight out of the water to show their best imo :) And i don't reckon Barras even rate into the top ten, that should start a fight

And Kingies taste like crap too raw, cooked it doesn't matter i can't stand it may as well eat an Aussie Salmon    , although i hear the kingies down south are meant to be ok

Lots of fish over rated but i suppose its up to individual taste ;)

Love whiting fillets, but havn't tried KGW

Taste in fish is different for everyone, my favorites, (more than one, and in no order) leatherjackets, white bait(Indonesian style with chillie), threadfin salman, tailor, dolphinfish, kingy burgers!, barra, flathead, whiting, JD, s when I can get em , spanish mackeral, coral trout, ....easier to name fish I don, t like....bream, snapper, spangled emporer, not real keen on shark, stingray or cuttlefish. Oh , anyfish that is full of bones and fiddly to eat, I dont like much.

Ive got cabin fever.....can go for a scratch no worries, but 2 hour drive, then walk around in the humidity, dig for 5mins, for a bit of foil or ring pull, back to car aircon! Its only 33 degrees, but man, 33 this time of year is like 63 compared to 33 in the dry season!

Add to that, I have 5 days rostered off, an infected tooth root, anti biotics make me drowsy, cant drink beer, bugger......just.....bugger!

I forgot about leatherjacket, they are good, as is whitebait, but they don't put up much of a fight davent.
Freshly caught Dolphinfish are nice as well. Definitely correct about personal taste though, for me fish have to be mild and not strong flavoured.

All the choices mentioned are good, but I prefer coral trout and red emperor over mangrove jack. KG whiting are great too. But for a non tropical fish that is just delicious you can't go past Tasmanian trumpeter, IMHO. Hard to get outside Tassi or perhaps the Melbourne fish market.

Scrounger, I'd be very interested in seeing some of your drawings with a fish or other natural history theme. PM prices if you like.

In general terms, I think I prefer to eat cold water fish, my favorite atm, is salmon from tassie farms, cant get enough of it!

also looking forward to seeing more art work, drawings, water colors , anything.

At first I didn't realize John Dory was the name of a fish. Yes mate, that is sure a nice screen print Scrounger of the fish. Very exotic looking fish species there, I'm trying to imagine what it must taste like, must be good eating. I used to do a lot of fishing, got spoiled with a smallmouth bass stringer of lunkers on a fishing trip (Dad and I). Never tried to make artwork out of these pics, but might be nice to do some fish sketching later (after my current projects get done).

Notice the small fish is the only largemouth bass about no longer than 14" and is bottom near mid point of this pic (half cutoff view), top right in photo above.

No it's not a screenprint RRD, it's a pen and ink illustration with a gouache painted background. Other sketch further along in the thread is a pencil sketch of a snapper.
Oh, I'm using pen and ink on my portraits right now. Except my pens are still the carved tree branch I'd made and work more like paint brushes (both smaller and larger sizes) with the ink. Since not doing color yet, just black & white mix media, use the ink for some of the darkest shadows.

I'll post the new one when fished, had to take time out for the holiday season and getting finish up done now.

Yes, I really liked the John Dory fish, excellent work there Scrounger! 8) :8 8.(

I'm not 100% sure, will have to lookout for some at the local fish market or get out and catch myself one. :)
