Yeah. So I was wondering what would happen if I took the 5k out in in the backyard. It went ape poo. Sounded like a banshee having it's way with a cat. Emi central baby. Lol oh well, I only did it to annoy mrs Chewy who doesn't appreciate the sweet serenade of detectors like we do. ;) :p wonder what the neighbors thought?

I tried that here, only problem in the middle of Ballarat was all the signals I was getting in the backyard, dug a couple but just rusty scrap. Pretty old house with a deep lead near by & some diggings in the area that have been built over so not sure if there would be anything worth digging, need to rotary hoe the yard I reckon.

I've never turned my 4500 on at home with the coil connected and there's no way I would attempt to search my back yard. I perfected the art of flicking stubbie lids with my thumb and rig finger in this back yard. There must be hundreds (modest appraisal) ;) down there :/ :p

I'd be taking some samples and panning it. Never know you might come up with the goods

Crank up the rotary hoe Oz. Just get a vlf/cheapy...you never bloody know mate. :)
I took my home-made BB down the river tonight, where the bonfires immemorial have been, and longneck caps and old-style ringpulls abound. First thing I pulled out was a 1969 10 cent piece!

My front garden by the road seems to be the least junked out than the back end of the garden where the farmer dumped his trash. I turned on the Eureka at home and all hell broke loose!
My missus never complains about my shaft..sorry had to be said :p - talking bout shafts though, i filled mine a while back and blackberries have grown over it. No more :) i need the house plans to attempt again so i dont hit the septic or waterlines.
I hope the EMI issue in those better PIs gets resolved somehow one day

Many years ago when I was living in Blue Mountains I have run my old ( then new) Tandy detector over the back yard. Among the interesting finds was russian 1842 silver one ruble coin and 1928 29th international eucharistic Congress medal. A Florin and couple of shillings and lots of rubbish.

tried out the front of the house 8) no good near power lines will have to wait for a blackout ;) , found the electric fence kept signaling the detector every pulse so turned it off and moved away from power line then the iron stone was tickling the detector , Hard to find small things when she wont run smooth.

Its an option I guess, but being a rented house I'm not sure I want to dig up the yard to much or where any old pipes etc might be. The house would be over 100yr old so there could be anything under the yard. A VLF might be worth trying first, will have to find someone who has one to come around, grass will die over summer anyway I guess, haha.

Mucked around my backyard when I got the mxt.
House was a housing commision joint built in 1980, since been bought and done up, pool, 2 big sheds, under cover area .
Got a funny signal in the middle of whats left of the back yard, and dug a neat little hole, only to find a very deep and very old clothes peg, guess there would have been a hills hoist there back then.

Yeah, a vlf. My $50 ebay gc1006/md3006, on TR2 can tell ferrous from non-ferrous(generally). On that setting a pin-nail-177slug within 1/2inch of each other can be separately detected by the centre coil, which is about a 3 inch coil. My BFO (6 inch coil)will do it at about 1 inch spacing . Set on the non-ferrous side of the signal it will sound high, low/quiet, high. That one is based on Colin Mitchells Talking Elecrtronics Circuit 8 (at bottom of page). It even works near the fuse box under a fluoro light inside.

Ozzi - do you have the option of 'rolling up the grass' in sections? ;)

Looks like weve all had a go or attempt since the thread haha nice work. Why not give it a try hey..if the overhead powerlines arnt gonna be a problem. I like the blackout idea. Some blackouts go for many hours. Lots of time to detect

Talking about detecting funny areas.. has anyone waved thier stick over main tar roads. I swear ive been hearing jackpots. Keep your eyes peeled for roadworks or crumbling road patches where you can lift ( and replace ) tar. Tree roots and mines here destroy the tar roads. Something ive been thinking a lot recently.

i have tried my infinium in my yard and it was no good, to much emi, i will say i do live in a block of 5 units with larger unit complexes on either side of me and it is in the middle of Wollongong (city), then got my daughter her aldi detector and done the yard with some success then when i got my ML x305 done the yard again, the others in our units love me lol

I have the Infinium too Jamie-it was the first detector I bought. And despite reasonable results with tests, I have found more of value with my$50vlf. First trip out with my GMT I found gold. I got mine for $550. So if you can't afford a GPX, maybe sell the Infinium and get a GMT or an SD. I love the GMT because it has a mineral sands indicator, which will tell you where to start looking for the gold.

yeah was my first detector too, i love it to be honest, i use it for the beaches around me and i only paid $450 for mine with the standard coil then got a mono for it from a great member on here , i got the xterra so i could join my daughter in the parks with her aldi machine, i am about to get the gpx4500 or 5000, for the amount of times i actually get to the gold fields i think i will just get the 4500, they are a brilliant bit of kit

edit for spelling

Yeah the Infinium for the beach would be good. I love the beach but work/life in the bush means I haven't been for 5 years now-will get down to Kingston SE this Jan though. I also have the mono 8, 14x8 and 8x5.

cause of work/life i dont get to the bush alot, i dont like the beach to much to be honest, wont take up too much of the OP's post but how do you find the 8' mono, i have the 10x14 mono

.

No the grounds rock hard & grass is pretty crappy, I even think a rotary hoe would have a hard time digging it up.
I might just dig a target here & there so I'm not digging up the yard all at one, that way it won't look to bad.

Apparently it will find smaller stuff than the standard dd, but these days I just stick to that. Yeah the 10x14 is the big one, sorry. I can't make any sense out of mine, maybe it's EMI. Maybe mine's faulty.
