How do you check the transmission oil for the right level when there's no dipstick? 8)
Synesthetic oil....Tick  :Y: ...did they tell you which brand they used?
Ohh...you can't check the oil...forgot that ones underside and has a plug to be removed then oil filled through it :8 sorry :8
If you see any signs of leaks get it checked......it can be done at home if you have the right tools.... 8)

Were you saying full or semi synthetic oil?
If changing the transmission oil every 20,000 klms, would you change the filter every time as well?

Yes, I do my own oil changes at home.

You can use either....It would take a four speed electronic oil which is semi syn....full syn lasts longer but not really needed, if you were doing heavy  heavy towing and heavy application or burnout comps :p I'd go for full syn
There's nothing wrong with semi :Y:
Yes ........always change the filter when oil is done ;)

It's been 3 weeks since the transmission was done and the transmission mechanic told me that the gears from 3rd to 2nd will be hard (clonking) and from 2nd to 1st gears as well.
He said it would take 2-4 weeks for this clonking of the gears to go away.
Is this true?
After 3 weeks the gears are still clonking.?

What are you calling clunking? ...harsh shifting yes clunking not so much :/
Do you mean down shift clunking or harsh upshift

Not really sure what to say here digging 4 ....................... I did try to warn you in the most discrete way I could ;) sounds like the shifts are not as sweet as they should be. I would take it to another shop and just ask them to drive it and get another opinion. This model was known to have a harsh shift at times but the clunking doesn't sound right. .................... Posted as B5 also was :Y:

The oil could be a little low.....Are you sure it's inside the trany.....not a engine / gearbox mount transferring through 8)
Not easy to pick as most mounts are hydraulic so may look like it's there but the guts are bust
Guessing they're going to do a 1000k free check maybe worth going in a little early...make sure you tell them any issues and they actually write it down

Ok, I'll check the transmission fluid level.
Thanks :Y:
Don't you do it you'll give the guy a reason to void any warranty  ....It's gota be done correct to specs and transmission temp

Can you not go back to him because your not there?

It may need 100mls it may just need more driving to embed the heavy duty clutches and pump in
Stop  wait...how harsh?

I'm in nsw and the transmission guy is in Vic, 800klms away 8). He said give it 4 weeks so I'll give it another week.
Time will tell I suppose.
Thanks again :Y:

 :Y: ...any sign of it getting worse and :N:  ring the guy and let him know
Just have a look 8) nothing leaking seeping and make sure nothings loose...even have a look at the mounts...you never know

Sorry said a bit much ........................... hence edit. Lets just say no surprises here but as B5 has said may be something completely unrelated.
Get a trans place to test drive as it may at least give you peace of mind :Y:

Bogger's right and take your invoice and see if they can interpret it, at least you know where you stand when you go back for a service  :Y:
Best to know before...... then them trying to hide it with something else...like oh your diff farted it'self

Short story well maybe
My driver took his land cruiser to a top end dealer here in town for a new clutch got it back 4 days later
Found it hard to get gears so took it back and was told it needed to bed its self in it would be fine (that was friday )
Left friday afternoon for his 4x4 club meeting about 4 hours drive away (out the back of no where)
Veh kept jumping out of gear hard to change gears grinding and making funny noises etc
By the time he got to his meeting place it was making funny noises they were a lot worse then when he started
as it was dark he parked set up camp and went to bed
Next morning he got under to check the oil and see if he could see anything
Now what he found was two missing bolts off the transfer case all the the other bolts holding the gearbox and transfer case were finger tight
only some were half way undone so he done all the bolts up that were left in there
No phone reception in that area (i think his comment was Not Happy Jan)
Returned to town sunday night late with no sounds from the box and no jumping out of gear
Went back to this dealership on monday and told them what happened of course they did not belive him saying there was no proof of what he was saying
Well the power of the camera phone and video soon showed they were wrong
Talking to a mate that once worked for them he said that if a **** car comes in then the apprentice are given the job and still charge the full rate
Moral of this story as he learned was never trust what they say if you think there is a problem then its the same as a doctor get a second opinion
If you are a member of nrma or one of the others book it in for a check

Quote from a month ago
Diggin I ran a workshop for 28 years Hallam ........................... the answer to your question is don't venture there (being diplomatic here .......very diplomatic

Years ago a customer came in and had been given a quote from a repair shop in Hallam for a new transmission in a Camira ................ remember them :) Fitted a new kick down cable that was frayed and sticking causing it to hold gears and job done. Diggin4 knows the address of where the incorrect money making quote and diagnosis was made :N:
May well be simply a shift control adjustment but again I would certainly recommend a second opinion and if confirmed there is an issue then approach the repairer and ask them how they wish to address it ? But first step is to confirm that yes there is a problem and also how big the problem is if there is one? Bottom line is no matter the repairer you have paid big money for the repair so it should be spot on
Sadly have said many times over the years that the best part of being a mechanic is not having to trust my vehicle to another.
I won't even return a brand new vehicle to the dealer for warranty ..................... Long story short had a new car had a wheel recall and big argument as they wanted the car returned to change wheels ............... they wanted the car for two days mind you ;) Said I will not bring car just the wheels ................ when picked wheels up the wheel weights fell off the rims as I lifted them into the back of car. I turned to the guy and simply said now you know why I wouldn't bring my vehicle in.
Moral of the story is if you can find a good honest repairer cherish him as they are like gold and probably about as rare as rocking horse poo ;)
