Further to my last post of you were found to have a knife concealed in your door trim or some other obscure place, you would have some serious explaining to do. But if it were just in a tackle box or somewhere reasonable you would'nt have many problems justifying its existence.
Having said that, be careful if possessing a double edged knife anywhere it could get you in serious trouble depending on which state you are in.

I have always carried a Leatherman tool on my belt even on the plane until all the 911 crap. In my car I nearly always have a hunting knife, my butchering roll which has a skinner, boner and filletter in it and my tool bag has a stanley and cable stripping knife (Im a sparky). While detecting I carry a Bahco demolition tool which is a chisel with a sharpened edge like a knife. Its usually strapped to my leg or hanging off my belt.
If I had to defend myself I would use any weapon I could get my hands on to fend off would be attackers long enough to get the hell out of there. I think a good solid tree branch could do more damage than a pocket knife...maybe they should ban those too!!
As a side point some of my recent finds in playgrounds include a pocket knife, kitchen knives, scissors' and a razor. :p

Ouch!

As a father of 3 boys (who DOES give a damn) I can say that really irks me! (ie. your recent playground finds)

As for self defense, I agree with your philosophy. I understand keys make a great self defense weapon! Hold key as you normally would to open the lock (thumb and forefinger -- nothing fancy) and stab at attacker's sensitive spots -- such as face (esp. eyes), under jaw, under ears, low on front of neck (dip where collar bones meet), or even their armpits! ... THEN get out of there ASAP!

Luckily I know a fair few other options if need be -- but the first and best rule to avoid any attack, is to be elsewhere! (applies to avoiding a punch or stab by 1 cm -- or getting out of there ASAP).

Cheers,
Dave

The law says you cant carry, possess or use a weapon to hurt people or to defend yourself. If the police believe you are illegally carrying a weapon, they can search you and your car without a warrant. If they find a weapon they can take it from you. You cant carry knives, batons, flick knives, daggers, butterfly knives or knuckle knives. If you can prove you have a lawful excuse, you may carry or possess some weapons like a sword or large crossbow. A 'lawful excuse' could include having the weapon for work, for sport, for a weapons collection, display or exhibition. Lawful excuse does not include self-defence. You can only possess or carry some weapons if you do so safely.

My comment - all very wishy washy. You still have to prove 'lawful excuse'.

I like the section that states " If you can prove you have a lawful excuse, you may carry or possess some weapons like a SWORD or large crossbow."

YEAH i can just see it now "excuse me mr dwt, and what would you be up to"...."well mr plod i am skinning this rabbit i just caught"....."and you think that a 14kg 5'6" long 13th century steel broad sword is acceptable ?"....." well yes mr plod....its not a pocket knife!!"........WTF!!!!
