I have been out with my gpx 4500 and have found a few different things nails screws Bullet shells and shotgun pellets. Can someone tell me if lead and gold have a similar sound . Been a fun weekend .

Hi Tigersnake,

I have noticed distinct sounds. If you have the standard settings and have not adjusted the target sound, Gold so far has always given me a High-low sound and steel or iron has always given me a Low- High sound.

There are many people who can testify to the fact that gold give many sounds, including the Low - High that sounds like what you would think a great big nail would give you. Generally this seems to be on larger gold. The other sound I have noticed for a gold nugget which is VERY distinctive is a Warbling sound or a Wavering sound if you like.

Check out Youtube videos of people finding gold with their GPX's it is very interesting, the different sounds.

Bottom line - like John says - dig all and then you can be sure!!!

The thing you need to do is not listen for a particular sound. It's a trap many fall into when they begin to look for gold.

What you need to listen for is any break in the threshold. Different shaped and sized gold can produce all sorts of different sounds. Last week I found a round bit of gold, the same size and shape as a bit of lead shot. Even made the same sound. If I was just digging on sounds I would never have dug it.

Dig all targets, even if that means digging 100's of bits of lead shot. All the guys who regularly get gold dig ALL targets.

Hey Joe, last time I got that warbling sound, I dug multiple small bits of wire from the hole. And I mean small! Hard to find in the scoop.

I'm a recording engineer and I can't even tell the difference between metals with a gpx, gold will sound exactly the same as any other metal depending on size, shape and composition. Sure iron can sound a little fuzzy, lead can sound smoother, silver can sound brighter but if your skipping targets due to thinking there is a certain sound that gold has you'll be missing nuggets.

Simple solution is to dig everything. :)

IMO the same can be said for the SD, GP, SDC & GPZ detectors as well as some VLF's I've used for gold. You can get reasonably accurate at calling some target tones/sounds but never 100%. You'll always eventually dig something that won't be what your expecting one way or another. I've dug gold I swore was going to be wire or nails & rusty steel where I was anticipating gold.
I think anyone's that's being honest would admit there are times &/or certain areas that we cherry pick our signals though ;) .

In regards to target sounds....do targets only produce a high - low or low - high sound? Or can they produce a low - low sound or vice versa.....hope that makes sense.

It can make both. Thats why i mentioned before to ignore the tones (by that I mean the type of tone). Listen for any break/change in the threshold and dig every target.

Joe, Like Davent the sound you describe is always very fine/small pieces of dry blower screen wire.

I have found wire that made these sounds but have also found gold that gives that sound as well.

I was out with Old Hand a few weeks back and he found a target that made the Wavering noise, I ran my coil over it, same sound.

He dug it and out popped a 1+ gram nugget.

I also agree that in certain areas you can sometimes be fairly sure of the sounds and what the target may be.

In any case the old DIG ALL method is the only sure way to know what you have just run your coil over.

What I hate are screamers that blank out my machine.
In a really trashy area where I know forva fact a 28 oz nug came from, I constantly dig rubbish. I can only swing there for an hour or so, no gold for me there yet.

The only detector I was able to distinguish different metals was with my old ML XT17000 - I knew whether it was metal, copper or other trash. However I couldn't hear any difference between lead and gold.
